Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of Teena's first album on the Motown label?

Answer: None of these

The company is Motown Records, but they had many labels: "Motown" (blue background with a map of Detroit on it- Supremes and Four Tops), "Tamla", (yellow label with brown globe at the top- Smokey and the Miracles and Stevie Wonder) and "Gordy", (purple label with yellow writing-Temptations), were the most popular, but there were many others. 'Wild and Peaceful', while on the "Gordy" label, is her first Motown album. 'Robbery' is her first album for Epic Records.
2. Rick James not only discovered Teena Marie, but wrote all of the songs on Teena's first album.

Answer: False

He produced it though. This is a really short album, only six cuts. Rick wrote everything except "Don't Look Back", written by Smokey Robinson and Ron White (one of the Miracles) and "I'm Gonna Have My Cake (And Eat It Too)" written by Teena and Mickey Holland. She was already under contract to Motown when she started working with Rick.
3. 'Lady T', Teena's second effort for Motown, was produced by Teena herself.

Answer: False

It was produced by Richard Rudolph (husband of the late Minnie Ripperton). It was not until her third album that she took on the majority of the writing and all the producing.
4. By the time Teena released her fourth album, she was really hitting her stride. This one went all the way to number two on the R & B charts. What is the title?

Answer: It Must Be Magic

'Square Biz' was one of the album's hits, along with 'Portuguese Love', (now a classic). It's just an all-around great album, one of her best.
5. 'Robbery' (Teena Marie's first album for Epic records) had lots of well-known musicians backing her up, including this Brazilian percussionist who plays over 200 instruments and has backed up everyone from Air Supply, Al Jarreau, Alice Cooper and Aretha Franklin to Wang Chung, Whitney Houston and Willie Nelson. What is his name?

Answer: Paulinho da Costa

Paulinho is awesome! There is not a genre of music he cannot play. Airto Moreira played with Miles Davis and was so popular in the 70s that he was known by his first name only. Nana Vasconcelos is a Brazilian percussionist who specializes in the Berimbau and Jorge Dalto was once arranger for the 'Percussion Jazz Ensemble' (w/ Tito Puente) and pianist and music director for George Benson.
6. After the release of 'Ivory' in 1990, Teena left Epic. What label was her next release on?

Answer: Sarai

Sarai was Teena's own independent label. Alia Rose is her daughter. Cash Money is the label she is on as of 2009.
7. On her 1994 independently released album, Teena does a duet with Lenny Kravitz. What is the name of this album?

Answer: Passion Play

'Main Squeeze' was the song. Since the album was released independently, it didn't get the advertisement or the airplay it should have, and is therefore extremely hard to find, but definitely worth the effort. 'Fire and Desire' is of course, the classic ballad by Teena and Rick James.
8. By the year 2000, Teena was an artist in search of a label. She recorded an album's worth of new material and called it...?

Answer: Black Reign

The album 'Black Reign' was shopped around for over two years before Teena found a new label. She then reworked some of the material, renamed it and in 2004 released 'La Dona'.
9. Hailed as a "comeback", 'La Dona' went all the way to number six on the Billboard 200 chart. 'A Rose By Any Other Name' is a duet that she recorded with whom?

Answer: Gerald Levert

She sings 'High Yellow Girl' with Alia Rose (her daughter), 'I Got You' with Rick James and 'Revelations 3:8' with Common.
10. In 2006 Teena was back again and better than ever. 'Sapphire' is packed with wonderful ballads. The first release, 'Ooh Wee' got tons of radio airplay. This song uses a sample, which Teena seldom does; who does she sample from?

Answer: Herself

How good can you get? She uses a sample from 'Deja Vu', which is from her very first album 'Wild and Peaceful'. I thought it kind of brought things full circle.
