Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What country duo scored a hit with "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys"?

Answer: Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson

"Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys" was written and originally recorded by Ed Bruce, who co-wrote the song with his wife Patsy. The song was covered in 1994 by The Gibson-Miller Band, whose version was used in the movie "The Cowboy Way".
2. I first heard "The Door Is Always Open" as an album cut by Waylon Jennings. But who had a number one country hit with their version?

Answer: Dave and Sugar

Dave and Sugar were a trio that initially consisted of Dave Rowland, Jackie Frantz and Vicki Hackemann. Dave came from a gospel music background, having sung with JD Sumner and the Stamps Quartet. "The Door Is Always Open" topped the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in 1976.

Answer: Johnny Paycheck

"She's All I Got" was co-written by 60s pop star Gary "US" Bonds and Jerry Williams, Jr. On a personal note, all four of the artists mentioned in this question were artists my band had the privilege of opening for.
4. Dolly Parton scored a number one country hit in 1980 with "Old Flames (Can't Hold A Candle To You)". But what artist originally recorded the song in 1978?

Answer: Joe Sun

Answer: I Just Started Hatin' Cheatin' Songs Today

"I Just Started Hatin' Cheatin' Songs Today" was Moe Bandy's first Top 40 country hit, peaking at number 17 in the Spring of 1974. "She Just Started Hatin' Cheatin Songs" was a hit for John Anderson. "Cheatin' Is" was a Barbara Fairchild song and "Cheatin' On A Cheater" was a Loretta Lynn song.
6. What pretty brunette was Buck Owens' singing partner for several country hits in the 70s?

Answer: Susan Raye

Buck and Susan recorded several duets between 1970 and 1975, but only one cracked the Top Ten. "Great White Horse" peaked at number eight in the fall of 1970. Jana Jae was Buck's third wife and was also his fiddle player for a short time.
7. What was the name of the concept album Willie Nelson recorded in the 70s? It contained his hit version of the country classic "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain".

Answer: The Red Headed Stranger

This album, and his early 80s concept album "Tougher Than Leather", were both by-products of Willie's belief in reincarnation as well as his fondness for classic songs. It's a combination of original songs and classics. He has stated on more than one occasion that he feels he WAS "The Red Headed Stranger" in a previous life.
8. Waylon Jennings' wife Jessi Colter had a crossover hit with "I'm Not Lisa" in 1975. What legendary rock and roll guitarist was Jessi formerly married to?

Answer: Duane Eddy

Jessi Colter was born Miriam Johnson and had a recording career under the name Miriam Eddy after she married Duane Eddy in 1962. They were divorced in 1968 and she and Waylon married in 1969. She then performed under the name Jessi Colter.
9. Jerry Wallace scored several country hits in the 60s and 70s, but his only number one was largely due to its being featured in an episode of "Rod Serling's Night Gallery". What was the song?

Answer: If You Leave Me Tonight I'll Cry

Jerry was a World War II veteran, having served in the United States Navy. The episode of "Night Gallery" that featured the song "If You Leave Me Tonight I'll Cry" was "The Tune In Dan's Cafe'".
10. Billy Walker scored his last top ten country hit in 1975. What kind of "games" did he sing about?

Answer: Word Games

"Word Games" peaked at number ten in early 1975. I had the pleasure of meeting Billy in 1963 and he was one of the nicest people I ever met! He was a member of the Grand Ole Opry right up until the day he died in 2008, thus ending a career that spanned six decades.
