Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which American synth-pop band, led by vocalist Susan Ottaviano, had hits in the late '80s with "Boy" and "Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls"?

Answer: Book of Love

Book of Love also did an incredible remake version of Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells". Their songs were club staples throughout the decade!
2. Which English band created New Order in 1980 following the suicide of their lead singer, Ian Curtis?

Answer: Joy Division

Although New Order has been much more of a commercial success, many modern musicians have cited Joy Division as a major influence. Their weird but effective blend of punk, goth, spatiality, poetry, and synth-pop were epitomized in their single "Love Will Tear Us Apart".
3. Which influential goth band, featured in the movie "The Hunger", did Peter Murphy front before embarking on a solo career?

Answer: Bauhaus

Many music critics consider Bauhaus to be the first true "Gothic" band. Their biggest U.K. hit was a remake of David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust". They also made a minor splash with the lengthy and creepy "Bela Lugosi's Dead".
4. Which brilliant yet troubled musician and producer formed industrial-metal band Ministry?

Answer: Alain Jourgenson

Alain Jourgenson fought with heroin addiction for much of his career, finally maintaining sobriety in 2005. He is the mastermind behind such acts as Skinny Puppy, Revolting Cocks, Prong, and 10,000 Homo DJ's. Despite his problems, Jourgenson defined the industrial scene for almost two decades.
5. Which Belgian techno band, known primarily for their sexually explicit lyrics, had a massive hit in the late '80s with "I Sit on Acid"?

Answer: Lords of Acid

Lords of Acid, led by DJ Praga Khan, had several massive dance hits throughout the 80s and 90s. Their music has been featured in several movies, including "Sliver" and "Paparazzi".
6. Whose debut album was titled "That Total Age"?

Answer: Nitzer Ebb

Formed in England, Nitzer Ebb were known for their graphic sadomasochistic imagery. They brought the concept of industrial "EBM", or Electronic Body Music, to the dance floor.
7. Which German industrial band, whose name consists of an acronym only, had hits with "Split" (1991) and "Vogue" (1992)?

Answer: KMFDM

There have been countless rumors about what the initials of their name actually mean. In truth, the initials are a somewhat nonsensical German phrase, "Kein Mehrheit Für Die Mitleid", which translates roughly to "No majority for pity".
8. Which English goth band had massive club hits with "This Corrosion" and "Dominion/Mother Russia"?

Answer: The Sisters of Mercy

The band later split into another group, the Mission (the Mission U.K. to U.S. fans). Led by lead singer Andrew Eldritch, the Sisters of Mercy had a deep, Wagnerian vibe. Their album "Floodland" was ubiquitous throughout the clubs.
9. Which English indie rock band, led by lead singer Morrissey, had their biggest hit internationally with "Sheila Take a Bow"?

Answer: The Smiths

Sadly, the Smiths broke up soon after this album came out. Johnny Marr has got to be one of my favorite guitarists of all time. Fans of John Hughes' movie, "Pretty in Pink", will remember the Smiths' contribution to that soundtrack.
10. Which Icelandic alternative rock band had Björk as its lead singer?

Answer: The Sugarcubes

Their airy style, minimalist approach, and sense of humor set them apart from other bands of the genre. Björk's voice ranged from a demonic growl to helium shriek.
