Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Life
Answer: Des'ree
Des'ree was very popular in the UK in the 90s with six top 20 hits on the UK charts. "Life" (1998) was her biggest hit during this time, reaching number eight as well as being a number one in Italy and Netherlands.
"Oh, life is bigger" is the line from "Losing My Religion".
2. Cry
Answer: Godley & Creme
Kevin Godley and Lol Creme left the band 10cc in 1977, to form an eponymous duo. As a two piece, they weren't as successful as 10cc, but "Cry" (1985) was a hit in most countries in which it was released, reaching the top 20 in UK, Germany, Netherlands, Austria and on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA.
The lyric from "Losing My Religion" is "Try, cry" towards the end of the song.
3. Oh No
Answer: Commodores
"Oh No" (1981) was the last Commodores hit which featured Lionel Richie as a member, before he left the band to go solo. Although the track stalled at number 44 in UK charts, it reached number four in the Billboard Hot 100 in USA and went a spot higher in Canada, where it peaked at number three.
"Oh no, I've said too much" is the lyric from "Losing My Religion".
4. With You
Answer: Chris Brown
R&B and hip hop star Chris Brown scored a Billboard Hot 100 number one with his debut single, "Run It!" in 2005 and came so close to repeating that with "With You" in 2008, spending four weeks at number two, but kept off the top spot by Flo Rida and T-Pain with "Low" (2007)
"Trying to keep up with you" is the line from "Losing My Religion".
5. In Your Eyes
Answer: Peter Gabriel
The incredibly talented Peter Gabriel released "In Your Eyes" (1986) from his hugely successful album "So" (1986), and although the track wasn't a huge hit in singles charts, it remains a firm fan favourite.
The track also features occasional Gabriel collaborator, the Senegalese musician Youssou N'Dour, singing a section in his native Wolof language.
The lyric from "Losing My Religion" is "The distance in your eyes".
6. Spotlight
Answer: Jennifer Hudson
Talented actress, and R&B and soul singer, Jennifer Hudson scored a top 20 hit in UK, as well as a number one on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop chart in USA with this track from her debut album, titled "Jennifer Hudson" (2008)
"That's me in the spotlight" is the line from "Losing My Religion".
7. I Can Do It
Answer: The Rubettes
What were the UK record buying public thinking when they propelled The Rubettes to top ten stardom? Between 1974 and 1975, the band had five consecutive UK top 20 hits, starting with the number one single "Sugar Baby Love" (1974) and ending with Foe-Dee-Oh-Dee" (1975). Fourth in the list of five, was "I Can Do It" (1975) which reached number seven on UK charts.
The lyric from "Losing My Religion" is "And I don't know if I can do it".
8. I Don't Know
Answer: The Sheepdogs
Saskatchewan rock band The Sheepdogs, became in 2011, the first unsigned band ever to feature on the cover of "Rolling Stone" magazine.
"I Don't Know" was released from their debut EP, "Five Easy Pieces" (2011) and reached the top 50 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart.
On a personal note, this track will always be a favourite of mine as the young daughter of a friend was convinced that the band, instead of "I Don't Know", were singing "Hot Dog Bones". Makes you wonder what the heck her parents were feeding her, but I promise, once you've heard it, you can't unhear it.
As with the previous answer, the lyric from "Losing My Religion" is the line, "And I don't know if I can do it".
9. Too Much
Answer: Spice Girls
Although they were only originally around for just six years between 1994 and 2000, I think most people in the world know of The Spice Girls, so great was their success.
This track from 1997, was their sixth consecutive UK number one and spent two weeks on the top over Christmas, before being knocked off by the charity recording of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" (1998).
Everybody "zigazig ah."
"Oh no, I've said too much" is the line from "Losing My Religion".
10. Just A Dream
Answer: Nelly
"Just A Dream" (2010) was the tenth time that Nelly had a top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA and in UK, where it peaked at number eight, it was his eleventh top ten hit. The track also made the top ten in Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
"That was just a dream, just a dream, just a dream, Dream" is the final lyric from "Losing My Religion"
