The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band Trivia Quiz

I loved this hilarious band as a kid, and as there aren't any quizzes on them, I thought I'd make one. Some questions are about lyrics, some aren't.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these interestingly-named musicians is not a member of the Bonzos?

Answer: George 'Zoot' Money

Zoot Money was, in fact, the keyboard player of the Animals, although he did play in Grimms with Neil Innes at one point. Rhino, Spoons and Legs played sax, percussion and drums respectively. Other band members included singer/trumpeter Vivian Stanshall, bassist Vernon Dudley Bohay-Nowell, and multi-instrumentalist Roger Ruskin Spear.
2. Neil Innes was a core member of the Bonzos. He also played a member of the Rutles, the spoof band behind such hits as "All You Need Is Cash" and "Cheese 'n' Onions" - but which member?

Answer: Ron Nasty

Nasty was the Rutles' answer to John Lennon. The Rutles, incidentally, played Glastonbury in 2004 - I went to see them, but missed half their set as, ironically, I was heading off to watch Paul McCartney on the Pyramid Stage.
3. The Bonzos reunited to celebrate their 40th anniversary, and played a reunion gig at the London Astoria, followed by a tour of the UK. In which year did this take place?

Answer: 2006

Various British comedians, among them Stephen Fry and Paul Merton, did guest vocals.
4. Sadly, Vivian Stanshall - one of the founding members behind the Bonzos - was not present for the reunion gig, as he had died 11 years earlier. What was the cause of his death?

Answer: A fire

Stanshall was found dead at his flat in London by firemen on 5th March 1993, after a fire broke out there.
5. One of the songs Stanshall wrote for the Bonzos was an Elvis Presley pastiche, which the band performed when they appeared in 'Magical Mystery Tour'. Which American indie band named themselves after the song?

Answer: Death Cab For Cutie

The song tells the tragic story of a girl named Cutie, who takes a cab into town and ends up dead, along with a mysterious man who may or may not be her lover, in a car crash. It features the chilling refrain of 'someone's gonna make you pay your fare'.
6. And now for some song questions. Fill in the missing word here: 'Can ... men sing the whites, or are they hypocrites?'

Answer: Blue

This line comes from - unsurprisingly - 'Can Blue Men Sing The Whites?'
7. What type of animal WOULDN'T you hear down on Jollity Farm?

Answer: Foxes growling

'All the little pigs, they grunt and howl
The cats meow
The dogs bow-wow
Everybody makes a row
Down on Jollity Farm.'

Perhaps fortunately, there were no foxes prowling around.
8. Which song starts with the line 'One, two, three, kick'?

Answer: Trouser Press

Do you like soul music? No? Then do the Trouser Press, baby!
9. Who was a 'supersonic guy' and 'all about'?

Answer: The Urban Spaceman

"I'm The Urban Spaceman" is probably the Bonzos' most famous song, and went to Number 5 in the UK music charts. I remember this song being played as we went into assembly in primary school one day. My primary school was a bit unusual; we also had the 'Fraggle Rock' theme as an assembly standard.
10. 'The Intro & The Outro' claimed to feature a wide range of musicians...including some rather odd choices! Which of these celebrities didn't get a mention in the lyrics?

Answer: Sigmund Freud (on bongos)

The bongo player was actually the Wild Man of Borneo. Other 'musicians' included Princess Anne on sousaphone, John Wayne on xylophone, Billy Butlin on spoons, and Val Doonican as himself, which apparently involved doing nothing but shouting 'Hello there!'
