According to a 1970 interview with Cat Stevens, Longer Boats "Is a story about space ships." In the interview, he also says, "I think we have or will be contacted by some other force outside our own world. We must accept that we are not the only ones alive." Also, in the live versions of "Longer Boats," the lyrics,

You can see them, yes they're looking down

Stevens' near death experience changed his life forever. When he was swimming in Malibu in 1975, he nearly drowned and according to a VH1 interview, he explained what happened, saying, "I suddenly held myself and I said, 'Oh God! If you save me, I'll work for you."' In 1977, he changed his name and converted to the Islamic faith.
