Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Contrary to popular belief, where was Phil born?

Answer: West Bromwich, England

Despite always being classed as Irish, Phil was actually born in Sandwell General Hospital in West Bromwich. He subsequently moved to Birmingham before going to live with his grandma in Dublin at the age of four.
2. What was the name of the first band Phil was ever in?

Answer: The Black Eagles

Phil was a notable member of The Black Eagles in the mid 1960s. Brian Downey, who went on to become Lizzy's drummer was in fact a member of the other two groups I mentioned: Sugar Shack and Liffey Beats, and obviously the other band doesn't need introducing!
3. Phil joined several bands before Thin Lizzy. What was the main reason why he left Skid Row (not to be confused with the American band of the same name)?

Answer: Was kicked out when he got his tonsils removed

Although the true events have never been fully disclosed by the members of the band, it would appear that Phil had to have an emergency operation on his tonsils after finding lumps on them. On his return to the band, he found out that they had hired a new member and he had to leave!
4. What was Thin Lizzy's first top ten hit that Phil was responsible for writing?

Answer: The Boys Are Back In Town

I imagine you all got this right through guesswork! But actually there is reasoning behind it - although "Whiskey in the Jar" reached number six, it was a traditional Irish song and cannot be classed as solely Phil Lynott's. The other two, although released first, never even charted. So coming in at number eight, "The Boys Are Back In Town" is the correct answer.
5. Phil had a major role in Jeff Wayne's musical version of "War of the Worlds".

Answer: True

Not many people realise but Phil actually played Parson Nathaniel. In the last few years as the amazing "War of the Worlds" has been brought to the stage once more, a hologram of Phil has been used to recreate these parts!
6. In 1979, Phil teamed up with various members of another famous band of the time to form The Greedies. They released a one off Christmas Hit 'A Merry Jingle'. Name the band!

Answer: Sex Pistols

Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols teamed up with Phil and guitarist Scot Gorham to record some amazing tracks together. The project was shortlived and soon Phil was back with Lizzy again, ready to record their new album "Chinatown".
7. Phil's first solo album contained the song "King's Call". Who was this a tribute to?

Answer: Elvis Presley

This one should have been pretty self-explanatory. Elvis was known as the King and Phil always idolised him. If you look carefully, pictures of Elvis appear throughout the video "To Do Anything You Want To".
8. Phil Lynott had two beautiful daughters, Sarah and Kathleen, but not many people know that he had a son who was sadly given up for adoption. What was his name?

Answer: Macdaragh Lambe

This fact only came to the light in 2003 but it was indeed revealed that Phil had a son in late 1960s. At the time for a baby to be born out of wedlock was to be frowned upon, so Phil and his then girlfriend decided to give the child up for adoption.
9. When Thin Lizzy disbanded, Phil went on to record several songs with Gary Moore, one of the most famous being "Out In The _______ ".

Answer: Fields

Released in 1985, this hit went on to reach number five in the charts. A fantastic song, but sadly one of the last to be recorded before Phil's untimely death.
10. After Thin Lizzy disbanded in 1983, Phil decided to form a new band. What was it called?

Answer: Grand Slam

In 1984, Grand Slam was formed by Phil along with Doish Nagle, Laurence Archer, Robbie Brennan and Mark Stanway. Of course, The Philip Lynott Band never existed and the other two were early bands before he found fame with Lizzy.
11. Phil also released two books of poetry. What was he first, from 1974, titled?

Answer: Songs for While I'm Away

Lynott's first book of poetry, "Songs for While I'm Away", was published in 1974. It contained 21 poems, all of which took lyrics from Thin Lizzy songs, except one titled "A Holy Encounter". There were only 1000 copies of the book ever printed so if anyone finds a copy in their attic, it is worth a fortune!
12. Phil tragically died of heart, liver and kidney failure on 4th January 1986. In which city did this take place?

Answer: Salisbury

On Christmas Day, Phil collapses and his wife drove him to a clinic in East Knoyle Warminster. He was consequently transferred to Salisbury Infirmary where after holding on for nearly two week, tragically passed away, aged just 36.
13. In 2005, a life size bronze statue of Phil was erected in Harry Street, Dublin. What have locals nicknamed this statue?

Answer: The Ace with a Bass

Dublin is infamous for nicknaming all of its famous statues. Phil's nickname says it all really - he was a fantastic person and was extremely talented on the bass. I am lucky enough to have been there on the unveiling of this statue and it was a wonderful occasion!
14. "Old Town", a song from Phil's second solo album was used as the "Top of the Pops" theme song for many years.

Answer: False

The answer was actually "Yellow Pearl". This made an appearance on the first solo album "Solo in Soho" but was remixed and remade for the second album where it was picked up by music show "Top of the Pops" and used as their theme song from 1981-1986.
15. Posthumously, Thin Lizzy recorded a Phil Lynott demo and released it, reaching 35 in the UK charts. What was it?

Answer: Dedication

This song was very fitting for the occasion - it made us all know that Phil was still in our thoughts. "Nineteen" was released by Phil himself just weeks before his death, "Please Don't Leave Me" was a song he recorded with fellow Lizzy guitarist John Sykes and "Lady Loves To Dance" was a rare demo made with R and B artist Junior Giscombe.
