Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which band, responsible for "Plug In Baby" (2001) and "Madness" (2012), is missing from this quote from "Sonnet 100"? "Where art thou, ____, that thou forget'st so long. To speak of that which gives thee all thy might?

Answer: Muse

Muse have had great album success in Australia, UK and USA with their brand of rock music which encompasses electronica, progressive rock and good old fashioned hard rock. "Sonnet 100" was first published in 1609 and speaks of Shakespeare displaying the love he feels for a young man.
2. Shakespeare may have been considered a "Magic Man", able to "Tell It Like It Is", but which band is missing from this quote from "Macbeth"? "False face must hide what the false ____ doth know.

Answer: Heart

Heart have been making good music since 1975 and have been around long enough to be able to play with some of the artists they influenced, as shown by their 2016 duet with James Hetfield of Metallica, "Beautiful Broken". "Magic Man" (1976) and "Tell It Like It Is" (1980) were early hits for the band, but chart success continued into the late 80s and early 90s with tracks such as "Alone" (1987) and "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You" (1990).

The quote used is said by Macbeth to Lady Macbeth after she has convinced him to join the plot to kill Duncan, the Scottish king.
3. Not many "Fat Bottomed Girls" in the works of Shakespeare but a few characters that think "I Want To Break Free", so which band does the bard mention in this quote from "Cymbeline"? "thither write, my ____, And with mine eyes I'll drink the words you send, Though ink be made of gall."

Answer: Queen

"Fat Bottomed Girls" (1978) and "I Want To Break Free" (1984) were just two of the many hits for rock legends Queen, fronted by the irreplaceable Freddie Mercury. The quote is from Act I, Scene I of "Cymbeline" and is spoken by Posthumus Leonatus in the garden of Cymbeline's palace.
4. Othello, speaking to Desdemona said, "No way but this, Killing myself, to die upon a ____". What was Othello's last word before he died and before he had a chance to "Rock And Roll All Nite"?

Answer: Kiss

Due to being manipulated by Iago, Othello in a fit of jealousy kills Desdemona. Once he uncovers the truth, Othello commits suicide but kisses Desdemona one last time before dying and utters the words in the quote. Kiss have had many hits through the years, such as "Rock And Roll All Nite" (1975) and "Crazy Crazy Nights" (1987) and are probably known equally well worldwide for their face paints and elaborate stage shows as for their music.
5. Did any of Shakespeare's characters suffer from "Tiger Feet"? Not that I remember, but "Sonnet 35" would seem to indicate otherwise with the line, "No more be grieved at that which thou hast done. Roses have thorns, and silver fountains ____". Which band finishes the quote?

Answer: Mud

Mud had three UK number ones in the 1970s, the first of which was "Tiger Feet" in 1974. They are probably best remembered now for their Christmas hit of the same year, "Lonely This Christmas" which is a seasonal staple on UK radio. "Sonnet 35" is another of Shakespeare's sonnets which is believed to be addressed to a young man and speaks of the feelings of betrayal felt by the poet.
6. "Don't Stop Believin'" in the Earl of Kent. He will welcome you with "Open Arms" after he has said his line from "King Lear", "I have a ____, sir, shortly to go; My master calls me, I must not say no."

Answer: Journey

The Earl of Kent feels his master, King Lear calling him from the grave and utters these lines, to convey his anticipated death and being reunited with Lear. Journey's biggest Billboard Hot 100 hit in USA was "Open Arms" which reached number two in 1982, although their most sung hit would probably be "Don't Stop Believin'" which is a perennial high school graduation favourite.
7. You don't have to go far in Shakespeare's works to find a "Schism", although "Prison Sex" is not something I recall, especially in "Romeo And Juliet", from which the following quote comes, "Draw thy ____! here comes two of the house of the Montagues". Which band completes the line spake by Gregory?

Answer: Tool

Gregory tells Sampson to draw his sword as the two men, faithful to the house of Romeo Montague spy two men of the house of Capulet approaching. Tool are an alternative rock band from California, well known for pushing the boundaries of music and art. They have had hits with tracks such as "Schism" (2001), "Prison Sex" (1993) and "Vicarious" (2006).
8. Romeo may have asked Juliet to "Stay With Me" but the band we're looking for is found in "Macbeth" when the titular character said to his wife, "And make our ____ vizards to our hearts, Disguising what they are." while discussing Banquo.

Answer: Faces

Faces were around for just five years between 1969 and 1974, but what a wealth of great songs they gave us, as well as being the band of Ronnie Lane, Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. "Stay With Me" was a hit for them in 1971. The quote from "Macbeth" is said when Macbeth and his wife are discussing how to hide their true feelings while planning their betrayal of Lord Banquo.
9. The King in "Richard III" arranges to have his brother Clarence murdered. Murdered by a glam metal band? That would appear to be the case as the first murderer says, "We are, my lord; and come to have the ____, That we may be admitted where he is." Maybe he can have some "Cherry Pie" after the deed.

Answer: Warrant

Warrant had two massive years between 1989 and 1991, with three Billboard Hot 100 hits in USA, including "Cherry Pie" in 1991, which was also their biggest UK hit. In the Shakespeare play, Clarence stands before Richard in the line of succession, so Richard hatches a plan with two murderers to dispose of Clarence.
10. King Henry VI in "Henry VI Part 2", when coming round after fainting speaks to the Duke of Suffolk, saying, "Hide not thy ____ with such sugar'd words". Henry does well to be cautious as "Every Rose Has Its Thorn". Which band was Suffolk hiding?

Answer: Poison

Shakespeare's play opens with the marriage between Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou, who is also the lover of Suffolk. The band, Poison scored a Billboard Hot 100 number one with "Every Rose Has Its Thorn " in 1988 and also had hits with tracks such as "Unskinny Bop" (1990), "Talk Dirty To Me" (1987) and "Something To Believe In" (1990).
