Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the drummer for the band when they recorded their most successful album, "Surrealistic Pillow"?

Answer: Spencer Dryden

Jerry Peloquin was the original drummer, Skip Spence then Spencer Dryden. None of the other choices ever drummed for the Airplane.
2. Which original band member formed the Airplane?

Answer: Marty Balin

A lot of people I talk to about this still have the misconception that Paul Kantner founded the band, but alas, it was little Marty!
3. Grace Slick was always the lead female vocalist for Jefferson Airplane.

Answer: False

Signe Anderson was first, and left in 1966 to be a mom. She sang at a show in San Francisco and the next night Grace replaced her.
4. Before Grace Slick tried her hand at singing, what did she do for a living?

Answer: Model

Yup! She was an I. Magnin girl for a bit.
5. The Airplane's second album had two fantastic cover songs on it. Name ONE.

Answer: Somebody to Love

"Somebody to Love" & "White Rabbit " were originally done by Great Society and written by Grace & Grace's brother-in-Law Darby Slick. Obviously they worked better for the Airplane.
6. Bill Graham was one of Jefferson Airplane's managers.

Answer: True

Bill Graham took over as manager in '67. Gee, smart guy!
7. Finish the lyric: "Data control and IBM / Science is mankind's brother /But all I see is draining me / On my_________________"

Answer: Plastic fantastic lover

Would you believe this song is about a TV? Marty Balin talks about it in the liner notes of "2400 Fulton Street".
8. Going back to the drummers of the group - Skip Spence founded The Frantics after leaving the band.

Answer: False

Mr. Spence founded Moby Grape in 1966 after the release of "Jefferson Airplane Takes Off". Lead guitarist Jerry Miller and drummer Don Stevenson were with The Frantics before they joined Moby Grape.
9. OK, "Crown of Creation". "Triad" was written by a songwriter that has worked with the group before; who was it?

Answer: David Crosby

Crosby wrote "Triad". He wrote it for The Byrds first, but they thought it was too racy.
10. Let's leave on a nice note. What was not a Jefferson Airplane album?

Answer: Red Octopus

Yup...that was Jefferson Starship, not the Airplane!
