Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Identify the missing band member. Emerson, _____ and Palmer

Answer: Lake

English prog-rock supergroup made up of keyboardist Keith Emerson - formerly of the band The Nice and considered one of the most technically accomplished keyboard players in the history of rock; bass player Greg Lake - formerly a founding member of King Crimson and; Carl Palmer - one of the most respected drummers to surface in the 1960s who cut his teeth in such bands as The Crazy World of Arthur Brown and Atomic Rooster. The band formed in 1970 and its first incarnation existed until 1979 releasing landmark albums such as "Tarkus" (1971), "Brain Salad Surgery" (1973) and the amazing "Works Volume 1" (1977), which featured their most enduring piece, an adaptation of Aaron Copland's 1942 work "Fanfare For the Common Man". The partnership dissolved in 1979 but reformed in 1991 until 1998. They returned for a final performance in 2010 to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of their formation. Sadly both Emerson and Lake passed away in 2016.

Whilst a number of bands from Iron Maiden through to Dream Theatre have cited them as an influence the band also received its fair share of criticism for taking their genre to excess and being pretentious. Influential DJ John Peel went so far to say that they were "a waste of time, money and electricity".
2. Identify the missing band member. ______, Stills and Nash

Answer: Crosby

David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash had all made names for themselves with other major groups before joining forces as Crosby, Stills and Nash (CSN). Crosby with The Byrds, Stills with Buffalo Springfield and Nash with The Hollies. Their strengths as a trio were their songwriting skills and their intricate vocal harmonies.

Within a year of forming they'd released their first album, "Crosby, Stills and Nash" (1969), and had two songs enter the Billboard Hot 100 Top Forty; "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Marrakesh Express". At this point Neil Young, a band mate with Stills at Buffalo Springfield, joined the group and they became known as CSNY. Young did not end up being a permanent member crossing between his own projects and those of the band. Of the subsequent eight studio albums to be released by Crosby, Stills and Nash only three included the talents of Young.

Whilst they straddled a number of genres their major influence was on the singer-songwriter culture which exploded on the back of their success, spawning such acts as Eagles, Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne.
3. Identify the missing band member. Delaney and _____ and Friends

Answer: Bonnie

Delaney Bramlett was a highly respected session musician in Los Angeles and was also a member of the Shindogs, the house band for the ABC-TV series "Shindig!" (1964-66). Bonnie O'Farrell was a notable singer who garnered attention working alongside blues guitarist Albert King at age 14 and in the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. The pair met and married. They had numerous connections within the music industry and formed a band that was centered around themselves and a range of transit band members (the Friends) that included such luminaries (amongst others) as the Allman Brothers, Dwayne and Gregg, Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge, Eric Clapton, King Curtis and George Harrison. Whilst their albums were held in high regard they failed to sell. The height of their success came with the 1971 album "Motel Shot" which featured the hit "Never Ending Song of Love".

Delaney and Bonnie were always a fiery pair and their relationship ended in divorce in 1973. Delaney has been mentioned by Eric Clapton as "the man who taught me everything I know about singing". George Harrison praised him for teaching him various techniques on the slide guitar that would become prominent in his later recordings. Delaney and Bonnie's daughter, Bekka Bramlett would also enter the music industry and, at one point in the early 1990s, fronted the band Fleetwood Mac.
4. Identify the missing band member. Peter, Paul and ______

Answer: Mary

This is a New York folk group that formed in 1961 and was made up of Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey and Mary Travers. Mary Travers passed away in 2009 but Peter and Paul continued to perform together. The group was put together by Albert Grossman and found immediate success with a cover of Peter Seeger's "If I Had a Hammer". Two years later "Puff the Magic Dragon", a song about the loss of childhood innocence, saw them flirting with the top of the US mainstream charts. Later that year they performed a version of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" at the "March on Washington", best remembered for Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

The song was so well received that they released it as a single and it would prove to be one of their biggest hits.

Their only US number one hit would come in 1969 when they recorded a version of "Leaving on a Jet Plane", a song written by their good friend John Denver.
5. Identify the missing band member. Bell ______ Devoe

Answer: Biv

Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe were three of the original members of the American R&B group New Edition, noted for their hits "Candy Girl" and "Mr. Telephone Man". In 1990 the band took a break allowing its members to pursue a number of side-projects. It was during this gap that the three got together to form Bell Biv Devoe at the suggestion of producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Their 1990 debut album was "Poison", which spawned the major singles "B.B.D. (I Thought It Was Me)?" and "When Will I See You Smile Again?" With its combination of hip-hop, funk and soul the album was seen as one of the pioneering aspects of the "New Jack Swing" sound of the period.

The band continued to perform well into the 2010s, releasing the album "Three Stripes" in 2017 and its members have returned to New Edition a number of times for reunion gigs.
6. Identify the missing band member. ______, Don and Charlie

Answer: Tex

Tex, Don and Charlie could easily be labelled as an Australian supergroup. In Australia Charlie Owen is held in the highest regard as a guitar player, so much so that Paul Kelly was moved to write the tribute "Charlie Owen's Slide Guitar" for his 1998 album "Words and Music". Don Walker was the creative force behind Cold Chisel, one of the country's biggest bands during the 1970s and 80s and Tex Perkins, the enigmatic frontman of the innovative bands The Cruel Sea and The Beasts of Bourbon.

Their debut album "Sad But True" was not a commercial success but was met with great acclaim.

The album has been listed amongst the "100 Greatest Australian Albums" compilation and Tex Perkins was nominated for an Australian Recording Industry Association Music Award as Best Male Artist for his contribution to the album.
7. Identify the missing band member. Ashton, ______ and Dyke

Answer: Gardner

Ashton, Gardner, and Dyke was a power rock trio that formed in London in 1968 that would release three studio albums in four years and wound up being a one hit wonder. But what a hit it was. "Resurrection Shuffle" blended a Belfast soul sound with brass instruments and rock sensibilities.

It proved to be a huge hit in the UK and found its way into Billboard's Hot 100 in the US. Tom Jones would later cover the song as single to support the release of his "She's a Lady" album in 1971. Faced with the lack of further success the band would go their separate ways in 1973.
8. Identify the missing band member. Dave Dee, ______, Beaky, Mick and Tich

Answer: Dozy

The band originally formed as a lark in 1961 as Dave Dee and the Bostons. It was a group of five mates from Wiltshire in England who decided that they could make a career from this and immediately threw their jobs in. In 1964 they changed their name. Between 1965 and the early 1970s they were successful in releasing a number of catchy songs that made the Top Ten in the UK charts, one of which ("The Legend of Xanadu") succeeded in getting to number one.

Their single "Zabadak!" was their only song that managed to chart in the US Billboard Hot 100.
9. Identify the missing band member. ______, Bogert and Appice

Answer: Beck

Legendary Yardbirds' guitarist Jeff Beck had, for a number of years, sought to form a blues band with a hard rock edge that could rival the likes of Cream and Led Zeppelin. He had enjoyed the works of both Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice and negotiated with them to join his band as early as 1967. This fell through when Beck was involved in a motor vehicle accident. Bogert and Appice had, essentially, been the rhythm section of bands such as Vanilla Fudge, who'd had a hit with a cover of "You Keep Me Hanging On" in 1967 and US hard rock band Cactus.

The trio finally got together in 1972 and released just one self titled album. The album met with moderate success and reviews. The most notable criticism of it was that the album felt subdued and could not match the energy that the band generated at live gigs. In 1974, after recording a successful live album the members went their separate ways.
10. Identify the missing band member. Peter, ______ and John

Answer: Bjorn

Peter Morén, Björn Yttling and John Eriksson, influenced by bands such as Stone Roses and Ride, got together in 1999 with the sole aim to "make good music for their own amusement". They recorded their self titled album in 2002, which was met with limited success.

The third album "Writer's Block" provided their breakout single "Young Folks" which charted successfully in a number of countries through Europe as well as the United States and Australia. Further success followed with their 2011 album "Gimme Some" where their song "Second Chance" was used in advertisements for Bud Light Beer and it became the theme song for the CBS sitcom "2 Broke Girls".
