Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It seemed like Eric Prydz was Number One for ages with "Call On Me" in the later months of 2004. The song is taken from an old hit by Steve Winwood, but who was Steve asking to "Call On Me" back in 1982?

Answer: Valerie

"Valerie" only reached #51 on its first release in 1982, although a re-mix was a #19 hit in 1987. The Eric Prydz hit merely uses the lines "Call On Me" and "I'm The Same Boy I Used To Be" from "Valerie". Some say it was the scantily clad female dancers in the video that made "Call On Me" such a hit, but I'm saying nothing!
2. Rachel Stevens wanted "More More More" in her cover version of whose 1976 hit?

Answer: Andrea True Connection

Rachel Stevens was previouly a member of the chart topping girl/boy band S Club 7, and her first solo hit single was "Sweet Dreams My LA Ex" in late 2003. "More More More" was a #5 hit for Andrea True Connection in April 1976.
3. Girls Aloud took a cover of which Pretenders hit to #1 in November 2004?

Answer: I'll Stand By You

"I'll Stand By You" previously reached #10 for The Pretenders in April 1994. The song was covered by Girls Aloud to raise funds for the BBC's "Children In Need" charity, and features on the Girls Aloud second album, the amusingly titled "What Will The Neighbours Say?" released in November 2004.
4. Jamie Cullum had a hit in November 2004 with the often covered "Everlasting Love". The cast of which TV show also covered this song in 1998?

Answer: Casualty

Originally a UK #1 hit in 1968 for The Love Affair, "Everlasting Love" has also taken artists such as Robert Knight, Rex Smith and Rachel Sweet, Sandra and Gloria Estefan into the charts. I have a feeling Jamie Cullum, (who gives a slower, jazz-tinged version of the song) will not be the last to score with this evergreen hit.
5. American duo The White Stripes scored with their version of "Jolene" in November 2004, but who had the original hit in the UK?

Answer: Dolly Parton

Perhaps an odd choice for a cover, but Jack and Meg White tackled Dolly Parton's "Jolene" in fine style in late 2004. The song was previously a #7 hit in May 1976 for Dolly Parton, with Strawberry Switchblade taking the song to #53 in 1985.
6. Which male artist earned himself a hit by covering the Sister Sledge hit "Thinking Of You" in November 2004?

Answer: Paul Weller

"Studio 150" was a whole album of cover versions that Paul Weller released in 2004. He also covered "Wishing On A Star", and "Close To You". Sister Sledge took "Thinking Of You" to #11 in 1984, and Maureen Walsh achieved the same position with the song in 1990.
7. Britney Spears said it's "My Prerogative" to perform cover versions in late 2004. Who took that song into the top 10 back in 1988?

Answer: Bobby Brown

Britney Spears first hit the UK charts in 1999, with her first single "..Baby One More Time" going all the way to #1. No stranger to cover versions, Britney also scored a hit with a cover of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" in 2002. Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative" reached #6 on the UK charts in December of 1988.
8. Christina Aguilera joined forces with Missy Elliott on her version of "Car Wash" in late 2004. Who was originally polishing those cars in 1976?

Answer: Rose Royce

Originally a #9 hit for Rose Royce, "Car Wash" was re-issued again in 1988, when it reached #20. Rose Royce singer Gwen Dickey again recorded the song in 1998, going two places higher to #18. Christina's version of the song is featured on the soundtrack of the 2004 "Shark Tale" movie.
9. UK duo Lemon Jelly got themselves a hit with "Stay With You" in late 2004. But which duo originally had the hit with that song?

Answer: Gallagher and Lyle

"I Want To Stay With You" was a #6 hit way back in 1976 for former McGuinness Flint members Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle. The duo's next hit, "Heart On My Sleeve" also reached #6. Lemon Jelly, who consist of Fred Deakin and Nick Franglan, re-titled the song "Stay With You" for their sampled cover version.
10. November 2004 saw Uniting Nations take a cover of "Out Of Touch" into the UK top 10. The song originally reached a mere #48 for whom?

Answer: Hall and Oates

White soul duo Daryl Hall and John Oates always performed better chartwise in America, with only "I Can't Go For That" and "Maneater" reaching the UK top 10 for them. Uniting Nations version of "Out Of Touch", with its driving backing track, entered the UK top 20 at #12 in November 2004.

As I write, a cover of the old George Michael hit "Careless Whisper" has just entered the charts, and a re-make of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" is expected to be the UK Christmas #1 for 2004. The covers and re-makes just keep on coming!
