Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The best known version of "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter" is the one by Herman's Hermits. Which British acting Knight recorded the original version?

Answer: Sir Tom Courtenay

Tom Courtenay sang "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter" in a play called "The Lads". It was broadcast on British television by ITV in 1963 as part of their "Television Playhouse" series. Tom Courtenay played the character Dobely. The record was subsequently released by Decca records but did not enter the UK singles chart.

Some of Tom Courtenay's best known movies are "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" (1962) starring Sir Michael Redgrave, "Billy Liar" (1963) starring Finlay Currie, "King Rat" (1965) starring George Segal, "Doctor Zhivago" (1965) starring Omar Sharif, "The Night of the Generals" (1967) starring Peter O'Toole and "The Dresser" (1983) starring Albert Finney. He was born Thomas Daniel Courtenay in Hull, Yorkshire, England in 1937. He was knighted in 2001 for forty years of service to the cinema and theatre.

"Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter" was written by actor/lyricist/composer/writer Trevor Peacock who played the character Adams in the same production of "The Lads". He is perhaps best known as Jim Trott in the UK TV comedy series "The Vicar Of Dibley" which ran from 1994 to 2007 starring Dawn French. He also wrote "That's What Love Will Do" among other songs, which was a number three hit on the UK singles chart for Joe Brown and The Bruvvers in 1963.

"Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter" was number one for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 for Herman's Hermits in 1965. It was not released as a single in the UK.
2. These two American actors both appeared on US TV as detectives, both starred in the movie "The Dirty Dozen" and both had number one hits on the UK singles chart. Who were they?

Answer: Lee Marvin/Telly Savalas

Lee Marvin starred as Detective Lieutenant Frank Ballinger in "M Squad". The series ran in the US on NBC from 1957 to 1960. He portrayed Major John Reisman in "The Dirty Dozen" (1967) and "The Dirty Dozen: The Next Mission" (1985), a TV movie and sequel to the original "The Dirty Dozen". "Wan'drin' Star" was number one for three weeks on the UK singles chart for Lee Marvin in 1970. It did not chart in the US. The song was from the movie "Paint Your Wagon" (1969) starring Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood and it sold more than 2,000,000 copies worldwide.

Telly Savalas starred as Lieutenant Theodore 'Theo' Kojak in "Kojak". The series ran in the US on CBS from 1973 to 1978. He portrayed Archer J. Maggott in "The Dirty Dozen" (1967). "If" was number one for two weeks on the UK singles chart for Telly Savalas in 1975. It did not chart in the US. The song was written by David Gates, a member of the group Bread.
3. Which British comedian (now deceased) who was let go by Thames Television in 1989 after 20 successful years, was very, very popular in America (unusual for British old school comics) and had a number one hit on the UK singles chart?

Answer: Benny Hill

British comedian Benny Hill moved from the BBC to Thames Television in 1969. In 1989 his show was cancelled by the head of light entertainment at Thames Television John Howard Davies, (he played the eponymous Oliver Twist in the 1948 movie starring Alec Guinness as Fagin). John Howard Davies explained that his reasons for cancelling the Benny Hill show were that the audiences figures were down, the programmes were costing too much and that Benny Hill was looking tired.

"Ernie (The Fastest Milk Man In The West)" was number one for four weeks on the UK singles chart for Benny Hill in 1971. It did not chart in the US. On re-issue after Benny Hill's death in 1992 it peaked at number 29 on the UK singles chart. He had three previous UK chart entries, "Gather In The Mushrooms" peaked at number 12 in 1961, "Transistor Radio" peaked at number 24 in 1961 and "Harvest Of Love" peaked at number 20 in 1963.
4. Before Ringo joined The Beatles Pete Best was their drummer. With the agreement of John, Paul and George he was sacked by Brian Epstein. What was the only Beatles single to chart in the UK or US with Pete Best on drums?

Answer: Ain't She Sweet

"Ain't She Sweet" peaked at number 29 on the UK singles chart and number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 for The Beatles in 1964. It was released on the Polydor record label in the UK and is not considered to be an official Beatles release.

"My Bonnie" peaked at number 48 on the UK singles chart in 1963 and number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 for Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers.

"Why" did not chart in the UK but peaked at number 88 on the Billboard Hot 100 for Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers in 1964.

"Love Me Do" recorded by The Beatles with Pete Best on drums was not released until it was included on "Anthology 1" by The Beatles in 1995.

Sometimes musicians backing Tony Sheridan were from different groups and all four of The Beatles (John, Paul, George and Pete) may not have been on all of the tracks released as being by Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers. After The Beatles were famous their name was far more prominent on re-releases of any of this material for commercial purposes, (a case of jumping on the bandwagon I think).

I would like to thank Mr. Raymond Jones of Liverpool, England, who may be responsible for the whole Beatles phenomenon. Legend has it that in 1961 he made a request for a copy of the "My Bonnie" single. This and other requests for Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers/Beatles and or Beatle records brought The Beatles to the attention of a certain NEMS record store manager named Brian Epstein.
5. Phil Everly was one half of the greatest rock and roll duo ever, The Everly Brothers. In a duet with a British superstar he had a hit on the UK singles chart in 1983. Who was that singing superstar?

10. A singer born in India with the surname Sarstedt later settled in England. All five of his UK chart entries went Top 10, one reaching number one. Then he became a regular background performer and stand in on "Star Trek". Who is he?

Answer: Eden Kane

Richard Graham Sarstedt became Eden Kane when renamed by his management team Philip Waddilove and Michael Barclay. Eden because of its biblical associations (Adam Faith was a top singing star at the time) and Kane because "Citizen Kane" happened to be Michael Barclay's favourite movie.

He hit number one on the UK singles chart with his first chart entry "Well I Ask You" which was number one for one week in 1961. He had five Top 10 hits on the UK singles chart between 1961 and 1964. He toured Australia with Roy Orbison, Del Shannon and The Searchers. While in Australia he hosted a TV series there.

Later when in Los Angeles he met and later married American journalist Charlene Groman who is the sister of actress Stefanie Powers. He moved to the US permanently and became a record producer while still releasing records without further success. He occasionally appeared on oldies tours in the UK with such singers as Brian Hyland, John Leyton, Marty Wilde and others.

He worked as a background performer and stand in for 18 years on "Star Trek: The Next Generation", "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", "Star Trek: Voyager", "Star Trek: Enterprise" and several of the Star Trek movies. He has also appeared in "Dallas", "Dynasty", "The Colbys", "Sisters" and "Columbo"
