5. "Darkness on the Edge of Town" was Bruce's follow-up to "Born to Run", and is (in my humble opinion) a far superior album. Which song did Max accidentally slow down? Hint

6. One of the most powerful songs on the "Darkness" album is about Bruce's relationship with his father. Which song was it? Hint

Question 7 of 10

Question 8 of 10
8. Staying with "The River" album, there was an intense song about being with a stranger when he died. Which song describes this? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Springsteen's sixth album was his first solo album, and he recorded it alone on a four track recorder in his house. Two of the songs from this album would be covered by Johnny Cash and go on to be country hits for him. One of the songs Cash covered was "Highway Patrolman". What was the other one? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. There were no 'hits' on "Nebraska", but one of the songs became Bruce's first music video, and he liked it enough to include in on his late-90s Greatest Hits compilation. Which song was it? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's first album contained a song that would be covered by Manfred Mann, and become a huge hit for him. Which song was it?

Answer: Blinded By The Light

"Blinded By The Light" may have been a big hit for Manfred Mann, but Bruce's version is much better. Manfred even got the lyrics wrong...
2. Sticking with Bruce's first album, which song contained the lines, "I hid in the mother breast of the crowd, but when they said 'Sit down' I stood up."

Answer: Growin' Up

"Growin' Up" is my personal favorite song on the album, probably because I was 16 when I first heard it, and it romantasizes the disdain for authority that we all feel at that age.
3. Springsteen's second album was "The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle". Probably the most memorable song on the album was "Rosalita". Complete the line from this song: "Tell him this is last chance to get his daughter in a fine romance Because a record company Rosie just gave me a ____________"

Answer: big advance

"Rosalita" was a long song, full of pace changes and lines that seemed to go on forever. Yet if you don't tap your toes to this one, you must have no music at all in your soul. Wonderful, catchy song.
4. "Born To Run" was the album that really put Bruce on the map. It has several classic songs on it, but it's the non-hits that are the most compelling songs on the album. Which track on the album is about going to meet a man to do "a job" for him, obviously an illegal one since Bruce brings a friend and tells him to stick something in his pocket so it'll look like he has a gun?

Answer: Meeting Across The River

"Meeting Across the River" is a chilling but beautiful song that reflects the feelings of desperation that Bruce's work of the era so effectively conveys. They know if they blow this one, "They ain't gonna be looking for just me this time." The album is best known for "Born To Run", "Thunder Road" and "Jungleland", but "Meeting Across the River" is my favorite track on it.
5. "Darkness on the Edge of Town" was Bruce's follow-up to "Born to Run", and is (in my humble opinion) a far superior album. But Bruce's drummer, Max Weinberg (now of the Conan O'Brien show) doesn't like this one because he noticeably slows down a song with his drumming instead of keeping proper time. Which song did Max accidentally slow down?

Answer: Something In The Night

Toward the end of the song, Bruce starts singing with only the drums backing him, and Max loses the beat enough to noticably slow down the song. Weinberg is possibly the best rock 'n roll drummer ever, so this mistake was even harder to miss.
6. One of the most powerful songs on the "Darkness" album is about Bruce's relationship with his father. Which song was it?

Answer: Adam Raised A Cain

"Adam Raised a Cain" is possibly the hardest rock Bruce ever recorded, and one of the most bitter songs. He would later record "Independence Day" for his album "The River", and "My Father's House" for the album "Nebraska". Bruce says that if you listen to those three songs back to back to back, you will hear him grow up.
7. Springsteen's next album was his first double album, "The River". It is an interesting mix of youth and maturity, with more songs about the recklessness and hopelessness of youth, as well as many songs about settling into life. It also had his first top ten hit. Which song was it?

Answer: Hungry Heart

Bruce sold millions of albums prior to "The River", but he was still largely a 'cult' figure. "Hungry Heart" was his breakthrough song, and got him into the top ten for the first time.
8. Staying with "The River" album, there was an intense song about being with a stranger when he died. Which song describes this?

Answer: Wreck on the Highway

Another of my personal favorites, "Wreck on the Highway" tells the story of finding a crashed car on a lonesome country road, and trying to be some comfort to the stranger in the wreck while he died. How Bruce can get to your heart with such simply ideas and lyrics is amazing.
9. Springsteen's sixth album was his first solo album, and he recorded it alone on a four track recorder in his house. Two of the songs from this album would be covered by Johnny Cash and go on to be country hits for him. One of the songs Cash covered was "Highway Patrolman". What was the other one?

Answer: Johnny 99

I love Johnny Cash, but his full-blown studio recordings of these songs can't hold a candle to Bruce's versions, recorded alone in his living room. I've always thought of "Nebraska" as Bruce's masterpiece. Simple and bare, but incredibly powerful.
10. There were no 'hits' on "Nebraska", but one of the songs became Bruce's first music video, and he liked it enough to include in on his late-90s Greatest Hits compilation. Which song was it?

Answer: Atlantic City

"Atlantic City" is another song about desperate people trying to find a way to get a leg up on life. Like every song on this album, it is full of wonderful imagery, and simple phrases that somehow mean so much more than they first appear to.

Thanks for playing!
