Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Elton John's first Top Five USA hit?

Answer: Crocodile Rock

Elton's first Top 40 hit was "Your Song", released in 1970, reaching number eight. "Rocket Man" and "Honky Cat" made the top 10 in 1972. "Crocodile Rock" was released in late 1972, hitting number one, becoming his first top five as well as his first number one hit, followed up by "Daniel" which hit number two.
2. Christine McVie was the first female member of Fleetwood Mac.

Answer: True

Christine McVie joined in 1970 while the band was still in England. Stevie Nicks joined in 1975 after the band relocated to the States in 1974.
3. What was Aerosmith's first Top five hit according to Billboard USA?

Answer: Angel

"Dream On" reached number six in 1976, "Walk This Way" hit number ten in 1977, and "Angel" was their first top five, reaching number three in 1988. The second release of "Walk This Way" in 1986 was credited to Run DMC with Tyler and Perry NOT Aerosmith, otherwise this would have been their first top five, reaching number four. "Love In An Elevator" was their second top five, reaching number five in 1989.
4. Barbra Streisand's first USA number one single was from a movie which she originally asked Elvis Presley to star in with her.

Answer: False

Actually, it was her second number one hit, also from a movie, in which she asked Elvis to co-star with her: "A Star Is Born". Her first number one was "The Way We Were" in 1974. "Love Theme From 'A Star Is Born'(Evergreen)" was number one in early 1977.

As it turns out, Elvis wanted the part, but his manager asked for top billing and that was the end of that. Who knows--if he had backed down and just co-starred, that decision may have turned his life around and he might still be alive today...
5. Was was Queen's first top five hit in the USA?

Answer: We Are The Champions

"Bohemian Rhapsody" in its first release hit number nine in 1976, later hitting number two in 1992 from its inclusion in "Wayne's World". "We Are The Champions" made it to number four in Jan. 1978 becoming their first top five hit. "We Will Rock You" was the flip side of "We Are The Champions", no doubt contributing to the success of the single.
"Crazy Little Thing Called Love" became their first number one in 1980.
6. Who was the first former Beatle to have a number one single in the USA?

Answer: George Harrison

George Harrison's first solo hit, "My Sweet Lord", was released in 1970, hitting number one on Dec. 26, 1970 for a total of four weeks. Next was Paul McCartney, with "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey", in the fall of 1971, followed by Ringo with "Photograph" in November of 1973, and lastly, John Lennon with "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" in 1974.
7. In the U.S., who was the first artist to have an album or cd debut at number one?

Answer: Elton John

"Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy" debuted at number one on June 7, 1975. Albums debuting at number one became more common after Billboard started using SoundScan, Inc. in 1991 which tracks the barcode to count actual units sold. I don't believe any album except Elton's debuted at number one before SoundScan--does anyone know?
8. Who was the first artist to have a SINGLE debut at number one in the USA?

Answer: Michael Jackson

"You Are Not Alone" was the first single to debut at number one on Sept. 2, 1995, with Mariah Carey next on Sept. 30, 1995 with "Fantasy".
9. In the USA, the first number one hit of the rock era in (beginning Jan. 1, 1955) was sung by a woman.

Answer: True

The first number one of the rock era was "Let Me Go Lover", by Joan Weber.
10. What song is widely regarded as the first number one disco song in the USA?

Answer: "Rock The Boat " (Hues Corporation)

"Rock The Boat" by Hues Corportation is regarded as the first number one disco song, hitting number one on July 6, 1974.
11. Of the artists listed below, who was the first to have a posthumous number one single in the USA?

Answer: Otis Redding

Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" hit number one on March 16, 1968. Richie Valen's hit "Donna" peaked on the charts after his death, but only at number two. Jim Croce hit number one with "Time In A Bottle" in December of 1973, three months after his death. John Lennon died on December 8, 1980, when "(Just Like) Starting Over" was at number six; by December 27th, it was the number one song.
12. All of the following artists first started out as backups for others except which one?

Answer: KC And The Sunshine Band

The Eagles were Linda Ronstadt's backing band from 1971. Barry Manilow was Bette Midler's arranger and accompanist early in her career, and Richard Marx was a backup singer for Lionel Richie.
13. Not counting his partnership with Jim Messina, Kenny Loggins has had some guest vocalists on his singles. Who was the first guest vocalist?

Answer: Stevie Nicks

"Whenever I Call You Friend" was with Stevie Nicks in 1978. "Don't Fight It", with Steve Perry was from 1982. Next was Michael McDonald in late 1982 with "Heart To Heart", and last of these, "I'm Gonna Miss You" with Mickey Thomas in 1988.
14. Barbra Streisand has had a number of duets as singles in her career. Who was the first artist to duet with her?

Answer: Neil Diamond

Actually, the "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" duet from 1978 was not intentional. A DJ from Tennessee created the duet using Neil Diamond's recording and mixing it with Barbra's recording and started playing it on the radio. Barbra and Neil later recorded it together resulting in a number one single. Next was Donna Summer in late 1979 with "No More Tears(Enough Is Enough)", and then Barry Gibb with "Guilty" in late 1980. Kris Kristofferson was her co-star in "A Star Is Born", but if they recorded anything together, it never charted as a single.
15. Who was the first married couple to chart in the top ten (USA) in the rock era (begining Jan, 1955).

Answer: Les Paul and Mary Ford

"Hummingbird" hit number seven in 1955. Sonny & Cher may have been the first husband and wife act to hit number one--in 1965 with "I've Got You Babe". Carly Simon and James Taylor recorded duets and provided backing vocals on each other's records in the 1970s. Pat Boone and wife Shirley never had a chart single.
