2. I guess at the time there were many parents who wanted to see this singer doing his act in the place he was singing about; will these words help you to name him? "Bugsy turned to Shify and he said "Nix nix I wanna stick around a while and get my kicks".

Answer: Elvis Presley

Elvis was doing the "Jailhouse Rock" all the way to number one for three weeks on the UK chart in 1958, it reached number one for seven weeks on the US pop chart in 1957. It was the first record to enter the UK chart at number one.

Answer: The Story Of My Life

Michael Holliday had a UK number one for two weeks with "The Story Of My Life" in 1958. Along with many other UK singers of the time he failed to have any chart hits in the US. This was one of only two UK number one hits by UK singers in 1958 out of 13 number one hits. It was a cover of the Marty Robbins original which reached number 15 on the US pop chart in 1958 but failed to chart in the UK.

"Stairway Of Love" reached number three on the UK chart in 1958. "Starry Eyed" reached number one on the UK chart in 1960. "Little Boy Lost" reached number 50 on the UK chart in 1960. All the alternate song titles are Michael Holliday UK hits. "Little Boy Lost" was a prophetic song title for his last UK chart hit as he suffered from poor memory (forgot lyrics on stage) stage fright and had a mental breakdown in 1961; he took his own life in 1963.
4. This US singer failed to reach the US and UK charts nine times except for a duet with Marvin Rainwater which just made the US pop chart. This song changed all that and sold a million. Can you name the singer from these words? "Right to the end just like a friend I tried to warn you somehow".

Answer: Connie Francis

Connie Francis finally made the UK chart with "Who's Sorry Now" and had a number one hit for six weeks, it reached number four on the US pop chart in 1958. The story goes that this song was recorded in the last part of what was supposed to be her final recording session for MGM. The rest, they say, is pop history.

Brenda Lee had a number 72 hit with "Dynamite" on the US pop chart in 1957, it failed to chart in the UK. Wanda Jackson had a number 32 hit with "Let's Have A Party" on the UK chart, it reached number 37 on the US pop chart in 1960. Connie Stevens had a number nine hit with "Sixteen Reasons" on the UK chart, it reached number three on the US pop chart in 1960.
5. The Kalin Twins were the first twins as a duo to reach number one in the UK but they were never seen again on the UK chart. With these lyrics, can you get the title of this one hit wonder? "I need you, I want you near me I love you, yes I do and I hope you hear me".

Answer: When

"When" sang The Kalin Twins and they spent five weeks at number one on the UK chart in 1958 but were never seen again. They reached number five on the US pop chart the same year and had three other chart hits in the US.

How fickle is fame? On their first tour of the UK they were supported by future superstar and Knight of the Realm and still going strong Sir Cliff Richard. In 1989 the twins appeared with Cliff Richard, The Dallas Boys, The Vernons girls and others at Wembley Stadium (you can see it on YouTube) in a recreation of the '50s UK TV show "Oh Boy!".
6. "All I Have To Do Is Dream/Claudette" was a double A-side UK number one for the Everly Brothers this year. Which famous singer wrote "Claudette" as a tribute to his wife?

Answer: Roy Orbison

Roy Orbison wrote "Claudette" and The Everly Brothers had a double A-side UK number one for six weeks in 1958 with "All I Have To Do Is Dream" being the other side. "All I Have To Do Is Dream" was number one for five weeks on the US pop chart and "Claudette" reached number 30 on the US pop chart in 1958.

All four alternatives were singer/songwriters and had hits with their own and other writers songs. Many singers and groups have had hits with songs written by all four.
7. What is the title of this UK number one instrumental by the resident band on the '50s UK TV Show "Oh Boy", Lord Rockingham's XI?

Answer: Hoots Mon

"Hoots Mon" played by Lord Rockingham's XI was a UK number one hit for three weeks in 1958. It failed to chart in the US. They had a US chart hit before they had one in the UK, "Fried Onions" which reached number 96 in 1958; it failed to chart in the UK.

Although Jack Good the producer of the TV show "Oh Boy!" claims to have put the name together as a play on the words 'rocking 'em' a lot of people recognized band leader Scotsman Harry Robinson as Lord Rockingham. There was some dispute over who had the rights to the name and lawyers were brought in and the family of a past real Lord Rockingham were involved. The case was settled out of court. The four alternatives are all mock Scottish cries heard during the record.
8. Can you name this US singer who is 25% Cherokee and had his biggest hit on the UK chart with "Whole Lotta Woman"?

Answer: Marvin Rainwater

Marvin Rainwater sang "Whole Lotta Woman" and had a number one hit for three weeks on the UK chart in 1958 and appeared on UK TV at "Sunday Night at the London Palladium". It stalled at number 60 on the US pop chart the same year. His voice began to go when he developed throat problems and he left MGM records in 1960 and he never had any more hits on either chart.

In the '70s he had throat cancer but recovered from that and appears occasionally. He has appeared at some European rockabilly festivals.
9. "It's All In The Game" was a number one hit for Tommy Edwards. The words were written by Carl Sigman in 1951 but which future US Vice-President wrote the melody in 1912?

Answer: Charles G. Dawes

It's not every day you get a number one record whose melody was composed by a US Vice-President. Charles G. Dawes wrote it in 1912 as "Melody in A Major" and words were added in 1951 by Carl Sigman. The song became "It's All In The Game" and was sung by Tommy Edwards, it reached number 18 on the US chart in 1951.

He re-recorded it in 1958 with the same orchestra leader but with a different arrangement for the same label MGM. It was number one for three weeks on the UK chart and number one for six weeks on the US pop chart in 1958.
10. "It's Only Make Believe" hit the UK chart by different singers in the '50s, '60s and '70s, who had the number one hit in 1958?

Answer: Conway Twitty

Conway Twitty took "It's Only Make Believe" to the UK top spot for five weeks and had the last UK number one of 1958. It reached number two on the US pop chart in 1958. Born Harold Lloyd Jenkins, he changed his name in 1957, taking Conway from Arkansas and Twitty from Texas. He had numerous country number one hits and was inducted into The Country Music Hall of Fame and The Rockabilly Hall of Fame.

Billy Fury's version reached number ten on the UK chart in 1964, it failed to chart in the US. Glen Campbell's version reached number four on the UK chart and number ten on the US pop chart in 1970. Child's version reached number ten on the UK chart in 1978, it failed to chart in the US.
