In February of that year E.P.s were excluded from the UK singles chart. (E.P. is an extended play 7" single, usually containing 3 or 4 tracks).

The Archies (a cartoon group) were voiced by a studio group with lead singer Ron Dante. It was created by publisher/producer/songwriter/manager Don Kirshner who also managed The Monkees. The Archies had a number 22 hit on the US pop chart in 1968 with "Bang-Shang-A-Lang"(I kid you not),it did not chart in the UK. Herman's Hermits who were real if I remember correctly had a number 22 hit on the US pop chart in 1968 with "I Can Take Or Leave Your Loving". It reached number 11 on the UK chart. The Monkees had their last US top ten entry in 1968 with "Valleri" at number three on the US pop chart. It reached number 12 on the UK chart. The Monkees had six top ten singles on the US pop chart and six gold discs in 17 months between 1966 and 1968 and that was it. I bet you've still hummed, sang or whistled one of them in the last decade.

It holds the joint record for most weeks at number one on the US pop chart in the '60s with "The Theme From A Summer Place" by Percy Faith and His Orchestra.

The Troggs had a number seven hit on the US pop chart with "Love Is All Around" in 1968. It reached number five on the UK chart in 1967. The Status Quo (they dropped the The) had a number 12 hit on the US pop chart with "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" in 1968. It reached number seven on the UK chart in 1968 and was the first of more than 60 hits on the UK chart in over 40 years. The Rutles (the Prefab Four) were created by Eric Idle of The Monty Python team and Neil Innes of The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, for Eric Idle's fictional "Rutland Weekend Television" programme. They then appeared in a 1978 TV mockumentary called "All You Need Is Cash" They had a number 39 hit on the UK chart with "I Must Be In Love" in 1978. It did not chart in the US.

In 1989 he sold his A&M record label for $300m and in 2000 he sold his publishing company for $350m. In 2007 UCLA anounced the formation and naming of The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music with a $30m gift from Herb Alpert and his wife.

Hugh Masekela had a number one hit for two weeks on the US pop chart with "Grazing In The Grass" in 1968. It did not chart in the UK. Paul Mauriat had a number one for five weeks on the US pop chart with "Love Is Blue", it reached number 12 on the UK chart in 1968. Hugo Montenegro had a number two hit on the US pop chart with "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" it was number one for four weeks on the UK chart in 1968.

It was a number two hit for Gladys Knight and The Pips on the US pop chart in 1967. It reached number 47 on the UK chart. James Brown had a number six hit on the US pop chart with "I Got The Feelin'" in 1968. It did not chart in the UK. Fats Domino had a number 100 hit on the US pop chart with "Lady Madonna" in 1968. It never charted in the UK. A British group named The Beatles made it a little higher to number four with "Lady Madonna" on the US pop chart and they had two weeks at number one on the UK chart in 1968.
