quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the recurring figure in The Fall songs whose lyrical description is as follows? "He is not appreciated / Drink the long draught, Dan / For the ___________"

Answer: Hip Priest

Our first acquaintance with the Hip Priest is in the eponymous song from "Hex Enduction Hour" (1982). The exact identity and reference as to who the Hip Priest actually is are obscure and often debated. Definitely the kind of a guy I would like to buy a pint to.

2. In "Kicker Conspiracy" (1983), who is the famous footballer that completes this lyric? "In the Blues Club, ___________ does rule / How flair is punished"

Answer: George Best

Time has confirmed "Kicker Conspiracy" to be a sad prophecy on what is to become of the beautiful game as commercialization pushes aside most of football's communal traits.

The Blues club in question here is not Chelsea but rather Manchester City of which Mark E. Smith is a long-time fan. The first half of the line comes to show how City fans knew to appreciate and even support the genius of George Best although he played for their arch-rival club, Manchester United.

3. In "Eat Y'self Fitter" (1983), what did the speaker see on his computer screen after setting it up? "Became a recluse / And bought a computer / Set it up in the home / Elusive big one / On the screen / Saw ____________ , I swear / On the screen".

Answer: the Holy Ghost

Make of it what you will, this has got to count as one of The Fall's most hilarious tracks. It appears in their "Perverted By Language" album.

By the way, "elusive big one" is probably "elusive fig. 1" which makes more sense in the context. Well, just a little more.

4. The song "I Am Damo Suzuki" (1985) is an open appreciation of the Japanese soloist of German Krautrock pioneers Can. Which German city completes the lyric of its opening stance? "Generous of lyric / Jehovah's Witness / Stands in _______ Marktplatz / Drums come in / When the drums come in fast / Drums to shock / Into brass evil".

Answer: Cologne

The song's drum beat matches the Can classic "Oh Yeah" (from "Tago Mago", 1971). Its lyrics contain multiple references to the German band's history and members, one of them being the city of Cologne where the band was founded.

In 1970, after the collapse of Can's first solo singer Malcolm Mooney, the band spotted Damo Suzuki busking on a Munich street - and the rest is history.

5. In the coupled "Dog Is Life/Jerusalem" (1988) a seemingly mundane urban story is intertwined with... William Blake's "Jerusalem". Can you complete the lyric? "It was the fault of the government / I was walking down the street / When I tripped up on a __________________".

Answer: discarded banana skin

Mark E. Smith is a true explorer of the lyrical realms of others, and I doubt if you can find a better example than this.

Here his dislike of dogs and musings on utopia lead to cataclysmic results in the shape of a major rift with his country and government.

6. Multichannel TV served a source of inspiration for quite a few late 20th century artists. What does Mark E. Smith have to say about it? "Desperate for entertainment / So I turn the TV on / There's people jumping up and down / Then they have the panel on / And they talk _______________"

Answer: a lot of wind

In "A Lot Of Wind" Smith refers to the TV as "the tragic lantern". It is taken from the 1991 album "Shift-Work" and is far from being Smith's heaviest hit on modern TV therein (hint: "Idiot Joy Showland").

7. Can you complete the lyric from the prophetic Fall song "Free Range" (1992)? "In ____ / A life code: / It pays to talk to no one. No one!"

Answer: 2001

Taken from the album "Code: Selfish" (1992), this is Mark E. Smith free associating on the new Europe forming in light of the fall of the iron curtain and the increasing visibility of the EU. Not the most optimistic of tones.

8. One of my favourite Mark E. Smith lines appears in "It's A Curse" (1993). Which is the omitted word? "I do not like your tone / It has ephemeral ________ aspects"

Answer: whinging

Taken from The Fall's masterpiece "The Infotainment Scan" (1993).

Whinging is British slang for whining, and "ephemeral whinging aspects" is one of the most beautiful threesomes of English words someone has ever come up with.

9. What is the missing word in the opening lyrics for "Service" (1993)? "Why do you have a cloud in your eye? / Walked downstairs / Got my hat and my corny brown leather jacket / Streets, grey and clean for a change / Must have been the _____"

Answer: rain

"Service" is a very British song in my mind. As you may have noticed, it opens with the title of this quiz. "Service" is also off "The Infotainment Scan" (1993).

10. Can you please finish the opening stance of "Mountain Energei" (2003)? "Mr Blairstowe and Mr Partridge / They said to me / To get a mortgage / You need an income lid; / I thought it was _____"

Answer: free

The speaker in the song is not exactly with us, and Smith makes it a point to demonstrate it in the bluntest possible manner. The song name being intentionally misspelled, Dolly Parton, Lord Byron and a fish from a cartoon all add up to the overall hazy sensation this wonderful tune gives.
