Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I Will Always Love You
Answer: 1993
Originally performed by Dolly Parton, who wrote the song, Whitney Houston sang it for the movie "The Bodyguard." Whitney took the song to number one on November 28, 1992, and it held the top spot for fourteen weeks. According to Wikipedia, it was Kevin Costner who suggested the song after hearing Linda Ronstadt's rendition.
The song "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" was originally chosen for the movie, but ultimately went to "Fried Green Tomatoes" instead.
2. Gangsta's Paradise
Answer: 1995
This song, performed by Coolio, reached the top position on the chart on September 9, 1995, but only held that place for three weeks. The first line of the song is taken directly from Psalm 23:4, with the rest of the song taking more of a secular tone.
This is one of the few songs performed by Coolio that would not require dubbing by radio stations, as Stevie Wonder was given writing credit for a portion of the song, due to the song "Pastime Paradise". Coolio originally had profanity in the song, but Wonder did not approve.
3. Too Close
Answer: 1998
This song, performed by the group Next, went to number one on April 25, 1998. It held the top spot for only five weeks. This was Next's second single from the album "Rated Next".
4. End of the Road
Answer: 1992
This song by Boyz II Men, reached the top spot on August 15, 1992, and held it for 13 weeks, setting a record at the time. It was featured in the movie "Boomerang", which starred Eddie Murphy and Robin Givens. After the song's success, Boyz II Men added the single to their album "Cooleyhhighharmony".
5. Hold On
Answer: 1990
Sung by the group Wilson Phillips, this song only spent one week at the top of the chart, on June 9, 1990. Written by Chynna Phillips, the song's lyrics came from Ms. Phillips' time in Alcoholics Anonymous. She had been battling substance abuse due to poor choices in her life.
6. Macarena
Answer: 1996
A big dance hit, this tune by Los del Rio made the top spot on August 3, 1996, and held it for fourteen weeks; however, it was the Bayside Boys' rendition that got there, as Los del Rio had recorded the song three years prior in 1993. A few years later, well after it fell off the Hot 100, (where it was on that for a mind-boggling 60 weeks), VH1's documentary, titled "Greatest One Hit Wonders", the song was number one there as well.
7. (Everything I Do) I Do It for You
Answer: 1991
Sung by Canadian Bryan Adams, this song, coming from the "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" soundtrack, reached number one on July 27, 1991, and spent a total of seven weeks there. This song was an international success as well, not only reaching number one on the Billboard adult contemporary charts (eight weeks), but also in Canada at nine weeks, Australia for eleven, and sixteen other countries overall.
8. Believe
Answer: 1999
Performed by Cher, this number one hit landed at the top spot on March 13, 1999, and held for a mere four weeks. Coming from her 22nd album, the style of the song was different than what folks had known Cher for, as the song had more of a dance genre to it versus Cher's typical pop/rock sound from her songs in the 1970s. "Believe" reached number one not just on the Hot 100, but also the dance charts, as well as in many other countries.
In a few countries, it reached number one on multiple charts (Canada, Belgium, Netherlands).
9. The Sign
Answer: 1994
This song, performed by Ace of Base, reached number one on March 12, 1996, and held for four weeks, then dropped off for the following four weeks to R. Kelly's "Bump n' Grind", to retake the top spot on May 7 for two more weeks. The group, originating from Sweden, recorded the song originally in 1992, but did not place the single on their album, entitled "Happy Nation".
It was slated for the sophomore album worldwide, which was the original album in the US, also entitled "The Sign".
10. Something About the Way You Look Tonight
Answer: 1997
This song was part of a double-A side, paired with the 1997 remake of Elton John's song "Candle in the Wind", which was originally a tribute for Marilyn Monroe, who died at age 36, but after Princess Diana's sudden passing on July 31, 1997, also at age 36, Elton John changed the lyrics to pay tribute to the late princess.
