Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with a band everyone knows. Can you put Nirvana's official studio albums in chronological order (oldest to newest release)?

Answer: Bleach, Nevermind, In Utero

The lesser known of these albums is probably "Bleach", which was released in 1989 on the Sub Pop label. The record included the original version of 'About a Girl', which became a hit years later when it was re-recorded live for the MTV Unplugged sessions.
2. Staying with grunge bands for now, can you name the lead singer of Pearl Jam?

Answer: Eddie Vedder

Before Pearl Jam formed, Eddie worked with most of the members of the band when he added guest vocals to the Temple of the Dog track 'Hunger Strike'.
3. Which Ben Folds Five album included the hit song 'Brick'?

Answer: Whatever and Ever Amen

Ben Folds Five (which only had three members) disbanded in 2000. Ben Folds released his first solo album, 'Rockin the Suburbs', shortly after in 2001. Folds once described his band's music as "punk rock for sissies".
4. Which band had the songs 'Today', 'Tonite Tonite' and '1979'?

Answer: Smashing Pumpkins

The Pumpkins' drummer, Jimmy Chamberlain, was kicked out of the band in 1996 for drug use, only to be reinstated in 2000 for the band's fifth studio album 'Machina'. The band only released one album in the time that Jimmy was absent, 1998's 'Adore'.
5. Which band has Wayne Coyne as the lead singer, had hits in the 90's with 'She Don't Use Jelly' and 'Race for the Prize', and is well known for a vibrant stage show that often features confetti and animal suits? Here's a clue: "______ Lips".

Answer: Flaming

Flaming Lips had a major breakthrough when 'She Don't Use Jelly' was featured on the show Beverly Hills 90210 in 1995. Zaireeka, their fourth major label record, was released as a four-CD album that is intended to be heard by playing all four CDs in four separate CD players simultaneously.
6. Which of the following is not a Soundgarden song?

Answer: I Stay Away

'I Stay Away' is in fact an Alice in Chains track. The other songs can all be found on 'A-Sides', the Soundgarden best-of album. Interestingly, 'Jesus Christ Pose' is the only song in Soundgarden's catalogue for which all four members are given music authoring credit.
7. Finish the lyric to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers song 'Under the Bridge'. "Under the bridge downtown I gave my _____ away".

Answer: Life

Lead singer Anthony Kiedis wrote this about his days as a heroin addict and the loneliness that went with it. The bridge mentioned in the song is rumoured to be a place where he sometimes went to buy drugs and get high. Guitarist John Frusciante's mother sang backup on this along with two of her friends from church.
8. Can you connect the following three songs to the bands that wrote them? 'Heroin Girl', 'Everday Should Be a Holiday' & 'Too Many Puppies'.

Answer: Everclear, Dandy Warhols & Primus

'Too Many Puppies' was the first song Les Claypool (frontman for Primus) ever composed. It was included on the 1990 album "Frizzle Fry", and was written in reaction to the ongoing violence in the Middle East.
9. In Greenday, which instrument does Tre Cool play?

Answer: Drums

Tre's real name is Frank Edwin Wright III. The original drummer for the band was John Kiffmeyer (a.k.a. Al Sobrante), who left at the end of 1990.
10. And finishing with a real easy one. Finish the title of this 90's punk band whose hits included 'Come Out and Play' and 'Pretty Fly'. "The Off_____"

Answer: Spring

Offspring have officially been around since 1987. Their 1994 landmark album 'Smash', set the all-time record for most units sold by an independent label band. To this day the album has sold around 11 million units.
