Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why, according to an old Chinese proverb, is kissing "like drinking salt water"?

Answer: You drink and your thirst increases

Wise words from the Chinese. So very true that, once you have had one kiss, you want another ... and another. You could probably draw various other parallels, like the fact that too much of either would probably drive you mad, and may eventually kill you.
2. In the words of Victorian author George Meredith, "Kissing don't last". But, according to a character in one of his novels, what practical domestic skill does?

Answer: Cooking

This wise advice appears in Meredith's 1859 novel "The Ordeal of Richard Feverel". The young bride, Lucy, asks her worldly-wise landlady, Mrs Berry, for advice about marriage, and is told: "Don't neglect your cookery. Kissing don't last: cookery do!"
3. Which actress, when discussing her voice role as Princess Fiona in the "Shrek" films, apparently once said "I'd kiss a frog even if there was no promise of a Prince Charming popping out of it. I love frogs. I'd lick him."

Answer: Cameron Diaz

Hmmm. Good news there for amphibians everywhere, but maybe she should be aware that the skins of several species of frog are deadly poisonous. But maybe you have to lick them to find out which ones.
4. According to US writer P.J. O'Rourke, on New Year's Eve you should get so drunk that you kiss - who?

Answer: The person you're married to

P.J. O'Rourke was born in Ohio in 1947, and is best known as a political satirist, but is capable of producing wry comments on a wide range of subjects, including the best way to make it through the Christmas period. The full quote goes something like this: "The proper behaviour all through the holiday season is to be drunk.

This drunkenness culminates on New Year's Eve, when you get so drunk you kiss the person you're married to."
5. According to lyricist Leo Robin, in the song "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend", "a kiss on the hand may be ..." what?

Answer: Quite continental

The song "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" appears in the musical "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", and was sung in the original Broadway show by Carol Channing. In the 1953 film, it was memorably performed by Marilyn Monroe. The moral of the song is that, while romantic gestures are all very well, a sensible girl should make sure she keeps her hands on the rocks.
6. Not everyone is cynical about kissing; certainly not the nineteenth-century poet Leigh Hunt, who wrote a charming eight-line poem entitled "_______ Kissed Me". The blank is the name of the girl doing the kissing - so who was she?

Answer: Jenny

The poem by Leigh Hunt (1784-1859), which compresses a wealth of wisdom about the importance of love into just a few lines, is short enough to quote in full here.

Jenny kissed me when we met,
Jumping from the chair she sat in.
Time, you thief! who love to get
Sweets into your list, put that in.
Say I'm weary, say I'm sad;
Say that health and wealth have missed me;
Say I'm growing old, but add-
Jenny kissed me!
7. Which seventeenth-century English poet, who also wrote plays including "Volpone" and "The Alchemist", composed the poem "Song. To Celia" which includes the lines "Or leave a kiss but in the cup, / And I'll not look for wine"?

Answer: Ben Jonson

The poem by Shakespeare's contemporary Ben Jonson (1572-1637) is perhaps better known in a musical setting as "Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes", although no-one really knows who wrote the tune to which it is traditionally sung. The first four lines in full go "Drink to me only with thine eyes, / And I will pledge with mine; / Or leave a kiss but in the cup, / And I'll not look for wine."
8. Actor Gary Cooper, reminiscing about the role of romance in the Western films in which he made his name, once said that "In Westerns you were permitted to kiss your ________ but never your girl." So what was the preferred target of affection for a typical Western hero?

Answer: His horse

Cooper was making the wry point that the strong, silent heroes in typical Westerns were rarely permitted any serious romantic interest, since Western audiences weren't interested in that sort of thing. That said, in Cooper's finest film in that genre, "High Noon", his relationship with his wife (played by Grace Kelly) is a key element in the plot.
9. Of which actress, his co-star in the film "Notting Hill", did Hugh Grant say "She has a very big mouth. When I was kissing her, I was aware of a faint echo"?

Answer: Julia Roberts

Coming from someone who has cultivated a persona of cuddly, slightly scatty, good-nature, I think that's actually a bit rude! The gorgeous and talented Julia Roberts may indeed have a fairly large mouth, but it's not very gentlemanly to mention it (especially not for the sake of a cheap laugh), let alone suggest it is the size of a fairly substantial cave.
10. I borrowed the title for this quiz - "A Kiss is Just a Kiss" - from a rather well-known song, which appears in an equally well-known film. The song is called "As Time Goes By", but in which of the following films does it appear?

Answer: Casablanca

"Casablanca" was released in 1942, as were the other films listed here (not a bad year for Hollywood movies, despite the distractions going on in Europe and the Pacific at the time). Herman Hupfield wrote both the words and music for "As Time Goes By", and it was sung in the film by Dooley Wilson. Surprisingly, it wasn't written specifically for "Casablanca", but for a 1931 Broadway show called "Everybody's Welcome".

Incidentally, the Oscar for "Best Original Song" in 1942 went to a song that appeared in one of the other options given above - "White Christmas", from "Holiday Inn". "As Time Goes By", as an existing song, would not have been eligible.
