Casey Jones was an American railroader who was killed in 1900 when his train, the Cannonball Express, crashed one dark and foggy night. When he realised the train was going to crash, he didn't jump clear, but stayed on board in order to slow the train down and save the lives of his passengers.

He was the only one to die that night, and because of his heroic bravery, he was immortalised in a traditional folk song which has been sung by Pete Seeger and Johnny Cash among others. The rock band Grateful Dead have been known to sing the traditional song live, and also wrote and recorded their own version about an engine driver who is under the influence of drugs.
