Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sid Barnes

Answer: Cricket

Making his first-class debut during the 1936/7 season Barnes would become one of Australia's finest batsmen in the period immediately after World War II. A member of the "Invincibles" team that toured England in 1948, he would play a total of thirteen Test matches for his country, scoring 1072 runs (including three centuries) at an average of 63.05.

He is best remembered for his amazing partnership in 1946 with Sir Donald Bradman that produced a (then) world record total of 405 runs for the fifth wicket. Bradman made 234 that day and then Barnes allowed himself to be dismissed on the same score four balls later stating that "it wouldn't be right for someone to make more runs than Sir Donald Bradman".
2. Syd Middleton

Answer: Rugby Union

Sydney Albert Middleton was an Australian soldier who served his country with distinction during World War I. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1919 for bravery in action at Gallipoli and in France and in 1920 was also awarded the Order of the British Empire. His rugby career started in Glebe in New South Wales and he was elevated to represent his State in 1908.

His performances were strong enough to have him selected for the Australian team that competed at the 1908 Summer Olympic Games in London, winning a gold medal.

A gifted sportsman, he turned his hand to rowing and found himself at the 1912 Summer Olympic Games (Stockholm) as a member of the Australian eights who won their heat but were eliminated in the quarter finals.
3. Sid Godfrey

Answer: Boxing

Born in 1897 Sid began boxing at the age of twelve on his father's farm in Bathurst, New South Wales. He moved to Sydney where he was taken under the wing of Australian champion "Snowy" Baker. He soon established a reputation for himself as the "K.O. King" and, in 1917, won the Australian featherweight title from Vince Buckley.

In the process he established himself as one the country's major boxing drawcards. A deadly puncher, he would retire in 1924 after 109 professional bouts of which he'd won 79 (41 by knockout) and drew twelve.
4. Sidney Taylor

Answer: Basketball

Sid Taylor is a member of the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame. Whilst he started his playing career in 1946 for the Scarborough club in New South Wales its was as a basketball official that he made his mark on the game. His dedication to officiating was one of the pillars that helped raise the standard of the game within Australia.

In 1957 he earned his Australian Referee Badge, in 1964 he was invited as an official to the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games where he was also awarded his FIBA (International Basketball Federation) badge and, in 1974, he was invited as a referee to the Puerto Rico World Championships.
5. Sid Patterson

Answer: Cycling

Patterson won world championships as both an amateur and a professional cyclist. He came to attention as a teenager when he won every Australian title in distances between 1,000 metres and ten miles. This earned him a place on the Australian Summer Olympics team in 1948 (London).

In 1949 he would secure the world sprint championship in Copenhagen and the pursuit title the following year in Liege. As a professional he was crowned the world pursuit champion in 1952 and would team with Russell Mockridge to win the Paris Six-Day event in 1955.

After his passing in 1999 the Sid Patterson Grand Prix was set up and conducted annually in Melbourne in his honour.
6. Sid Deane

Answer: Rugby League

Sid Deane was one of the founding members of the Australian Rugby League code. He would go on to captain the national team which he represented in five Test matches, as a centre, between 1908 and 1914. He first represented his home state, New South Wales, in 1908 and, that same year, was selected to play alongside the legendary Dally Messenger, in the first Ashes Test against the all-conquering British team.

The Great Britain Lions would tour Australia in 1914 for a series of three Tests with Deane, as captain, leading his team to Australia's first victory on home soil.
7. Syd Ball

Answer: Tennis

In August of 2000 Syd Ball was awarded an Australian Sports Medal for his commitment to the game of tennis. Though he struggled as a singles player he is best remembered as a quality doubles player winning seven titles and finishing a close second on fourteen other occasions.

The undoubted highlight of his career was partnering fellow Australian Bob Giltinan in the final of the 1974 Australian Open Doubles' final. In what was an all-Australian affair they were beaten in straight sets by Ross Case and Geoff Masters.
8. Syd Jackson

Answer: Australian Rules Football

Syd Jackson was an indigenous Australian footballer who was born in Bunbury, Western Australia. He made his debut in the Western Australian Football League with East Perth in 1963 and, three years later, would finish equal first in the competition's best and fairest award, the Sandover Medal. Unfortunately for Syd he'd been suspended during the season and was ruled ineligible to play. Recruited by Carlton into the Victorian Football League in 1969 he would serve them with distinction through 136 games, helping the club to two premierships (1970 and 1972).

He would eventually be named as a member of the Australian Football League's Indigenous Team of the Century.
9. Syd Fischer

Answer: Yachting

Syd Fischer is a very successful Australian businessman who is, probably, better known for his exploits as an offshore sailor. Fondly remembered for his association with the yacht Ragamuffin, in which he won the 1971 Fastnet championships, he represented his country in six Admiral Cup challenges, won the World Championship One Ton Cup in 1971 skippering Stormy Petrel, took line honours in two Sydney to Hobart Yacht races and made five, albeit unsuccessful, challenges for the America's Cup.

He has been honoured with an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) and inducted into the New South Wales Sporting Hall of Fame.
10. Syd Gregory

Answer: Cricket

The Gregory name is synonymous with the early days of Australian cricket. Syd and his two brothers would combine for a total of eight overseas tours for their country. Syd's father, Ned, was one of the eleven cricketers to take to the field in Australia's first ever Test match and his uncle, Dave Gregory, would captain the country in that game. Syd's nephew, Jack, was recognized, in the 1920s, as one of the most feared fast bowlers of his era. Syd, himself, retired with 58 Test matches to his name, at the time a world record, and would score 2,282 runs for his country with a top score of 201.

He also captained Australia in six Tests.
