Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Anne's birthdate is unknown but most historians think it is either 1501 or 1507. The date may be in doubt, but her parents are not. What were their names?

Answer: Thomas and Elizabeth

Anne was the daughter of Sir Thomas Boleyn, a courtier, and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Howard, sister of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk.
2. At a young age Anne was sent to the court of the Archduchess Margaret of Austria. Margaret was the daughter of Maximilian I, the Holy Roman Emperor. Margaret ruled the Netherlands on behalf of her father.

Answer: True

Anne made a good impression in the Netherlands with her manners and studiousness. She lived there from the spring of 1513 until the winter of 1514.
3. Anne become a lady in waiting to one of Henry VIII's sisters, who was Queen of France. What was the name of this sister?

Answer: Mary

In France, Anne was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Mary, and afterwards to Queen Claude of France. In Queen Claude's household, she completed her study of French and developed an interest in fashion and religious philosophy. She also acquired a thorough knowledge of French culture and etiquette.
4. In January 1522 Anne was recalled to England. This happened so that she could marry her Irish cousin. What was his name?

Answer: James Butler

The marriage of Anne and James was an attempt to settle a dispute involving the title and estates of the Earldom of Ormonde. The 7th Earl of Ormonde had died in 1515, leaving his two daughters, Margaret Boleyn and Anne St. Leger, as co-heiresses. In Ireland, a remote cousin named Sir Piers Butler contested the will and claimed the earldom for himself. Sir Thomas Boleyn, being the son of the eldest daughter (Margaret Boleyn), felt that the title belonged to him and protested to his brother-in-law, the Duke of Norfolk, who spoke to the King about the matter. Fearful that this dispute could provide the spark to ignite a civil war in Ireland, the King sought to resolve the problem by arranging an alliance between Piers's son, James, and Anne Boleyn.
5. Anne Boleyn was sent to the court of Henry VIII as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Katherine of Aragon. Anne made her début at a large social function held at court on 4 March 1522. What was this event?

Answer: a masquerade ball

At this ball she performed an elaborate dance accompanying the King's younger sister Mary, several other great ladies of the court and her own sister. All wore gowns of white satin embroidered with gold thread.
6. While at court Anne was courted by many eligible bachelors. Who was the first of these men?

Answer: Lord Percy

The exact nature of their relationship is unclear. It seems unlikely that their relationship was sexual. The romance was broken off in 1523 when Percy's father refused to support their engagement.
7. What title was Anne awarded, by Henry,in 1532, several months before they married?

Answer: Marquess of Pembroke

Anne's rise to power was unpopular with many of Henry's subjects. Many were upset to learn that at the Christmas celebrations of 1529, Anne was given precedence over the Duchesses of Norfolk and Suffolk, the latter of whom was the King's own sister, Mary.

Anne held the title Marquess of Pembroke in her own right. In October, she held a position of honor at meetings between Henry and the French King in Calais.
8. Anne had a great effect on the religious aspects of Henry's court and kingdom but many claimed that there was something of the witch about her. What physical attribute was often given as evidence to support this view of her?

Answer: an extra finger

The story that Anne had a an extra finger has never been supported by any historical evidence. Like the claim that she was a witch, it was a malicious rumour.
9. With Henry's first wife out of the way, Anne was consequently crowned Queen Consort on 1 June 1533 in a magnificent ceremony at Westminster Abbey. She was already pregnant. What name was the child given?

Answer: Elizabeth

Elizabeth was born slightly prematurely on 7 September 1533, between three and four o'clock in the afternoon, and was probably named in honour of Henry's mother, Elizabeth of York.
10. As the relationship between Anne and Henry deteriorated Henry's closest advisors were looking for ways to get rid of her, as Henry had now had his head turned by Jane Seymour. Which of these charges was NOT laid against Anne at her trial?

Answer: Heresy

Anne was executed on the 19th May 1536 on Tower Green.
