Handler was the wife of one of the founders of the Mattel company. She watched her daughter Barbara assign adult roles to paper dolls. At that time most dolls depicted babies. The American toy company Mattel Inc. launched the Barbie Doll on March 9, 1959.

She is an adult fashion doll who has been in constant production since then. Barbie has countless numbers of outfits and accessories making her the most profitable toy for the Mattel company. There have also been many companion dolls made as Barbie's 'friends' over the years.
