Tate and her companions, Jay Sebring, a hair stylist, Abigail Folger, heiress to the Folger coffee company, Voytek Frykowski and Steven Parent were stabbed, beaten and shot to death on the instructions of Manson. 19 year-old Garretson was the caretaker at the house and was in the back room listening to the stereo while the slaughter took place. Garretson was the prime suspect for a few days but was released due to lack of evidence.

Leno LaBianca owned a chain of grocery stores in Los Angeles. He and his wife, Rosemary, were murdered in their home by Watson, Atkins, Van Houten and Krenwinkle on August 10, 1969. Steven Parent was a friend of Garretson who came to visit him at the Tate house and was murdered with Tate and her companions. Gary Hinman was a music teacher who was murdered on July 31, 1969 by Bobby Beausoleil, another alleged Manson follower. Donald "Shorty" Shea was a rancher connected with the Manson family.

He was later murdered for what he knew about the Tate-La Bianca murders.
