Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Prior to the Tate murders, what has Manson been in prison for?

Answer: All of these

Manson was in and out of prison several times between the ages of 13 and 30. In 1969, he organized a cult that practiced free love. He also brainwashed several of his followers and ordered them to commit the murder of seven people.
2. Who was the only person on the property of the Tate house to survive the massacre?

Answer: William Garretson

Shortly after midnight on August 9, 1969, five of Manson's followers, Charles "Tex" Watson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkle, and Linda Kasabian entered the Benedict Canyon, Cal. home of actress Sharon Tate. Tate was eight months pregnant and was living with her husband, Roman Polanski, who was in London producing a movie. Tate and her companions, Jay Sebring, a hair stylist, Abigail Folger, heiress to the Folger coffee company, Voytek Frykowski and Steven Parent were stabbed, beaten and shot to death on the instructions of Manson. 19 year-old Garretson was the caretaker at the house and was in the back room listening to the stereo while the slaughter took place. Garretson was the prime suspect for a few days but was released due to lack of evidence.
3. Who was murdered the night after Sharon Tate's murder?

Answer: Leno and Rosemary LaBianca

Leno LaBianca owned a chain of grocery stores in Los Angeles. He and his wife, Rosemary, were murdered in their home by Watson, Atkins, Van Houten and Krenwinkle on August 10, 1969. Steven Parent was a friend of Garretson who came to visit him at the Tate house and was murdered with Tate and her companions. Gary Hinman was a music teacher who was murdered on July 31, 1969 by Bobby Beausoleil, another alleged Manson follower. Donald "Shorty" Shea was a rancher connected with the Manson family.

He was later murdered for what he knew about the Tate-La Bianca murders.
4. Who was the only Manson follower granted immunity for the murders?

Answer: Linda Kasabian

Linda Kasabian lost her nerve and stayed outside the house as a lookout while the rest committed the slaughters in the Tate house. She was also the only member of the cult who showed any sign of remorse during the trial.
5. What did Manson claim inspired him to order his followers to commit these murders?

Answer: He got the idea after listening to The Beatles' White Album

Manson claimed that two songs in particular, "Helter Skelter" and "Revolution 9", led him to believe that an armageddon was inevitable. The novel and motion picture were both named "Helter Skelter" and were released in 1974 and 1976, respectively.
6. When Vincent Bugliosi, the prosecuting attorney at Manson's trial, suggested the death penalty, what was Manson's response?

Answer: "You want to kill me, I'm already dead, have been all my life."

After Manson and his followers were convicted, he asserted that he was what the establishment made him, and the demonic killer in him was a reflection of society.
7. Who did Manson always refer to himself as?

Answer: Jesus Christ

Manson always used Jesus Christ as an alias. He also started many of his repeated diatribes by claiming he was Christ. He also believed he had come to do Christ's work.
8. Why did Manson and his followers have their sentence reduced from the death penalty to life imprisonment?

Answer: The Supreme Court had declared the death penalty unconstitutional

In February, 1972, the California Supreme Court voted 6-1 to abolish the death penalty so Manson and his followers were given life sentences and were also eliglble for parole. However, his followers claimed if Manson were executed there would be another armageddon.
9. In what year was Manson eligible to apply for parole for the first time?

Answer: 1978

Manson was denied parole every time he applied out of fear that he woud commit a crime just as horrific as the Tate-LaBianca murders.
10. Manson held a grudge against Vincent Bugliosi for prosecuting him.

Answer: False

Manson believed Bugliosi did a wonderful job. He also said it worked out for the best since Manson was able to consider himself retired and spend more time playing guitar.
