Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the victim, whom the press called "The Black Dahlia"?

Answer: Elizabeth Short

Elizabeth was born on July 24, 1929 in Hyde Park, Massachusetts. She was often called Betty when she was a child, and Beth when she was older.
2. What happened to Elizabeth's father, Cleo, when Beth was five years old?

Answer: He disappeared, but came back later

He was believed to have been killed or committed suicide, as his empty car was found near a bridge. However, he later approached his wife with a letter, apologizing and wishing for her to take him back. She refused.
3. Beth left her home to travel where when she was nineteen?

Answer: Vallejo

She went there to live with her father for a while, but he kicked her out for staying out too late and not doing anything. Beth moved on to Santa Barbara.
4. Which later iconic lady was Beth rumoured to have known when she was young?

Answer: Marilyn Monroe

It was never confirmed by anyone, but reportedly they partied together every now and then. It's even been said they had an affair, which I find rather unlikely.
5. What natural colour hair did Beth have?

Answer: Brown

Though Bethshort.com claims: "Her name evolved from her black hair and black attire", the report from the coroner's inquest states that she had "light blue eyes and brown hair".

There is debate as to whether the nickname was given to her before her death or whether it came after death from journalists reports on the case.
6. What was the date of that fateful day when Beth's body was discovered?

Answer: January 15, 1947

A passerby named Betty Bersinger found Beth's naked body on a vacant lot near Hollywood on January 15.
7. In what condition was Beth's body found?

Answer: In two pieces

As horrible and gruesome as it is, that was the case. Her face had been sliced as well, and her mouth had been forced into a smile.
8. Around how many people came over to the LAPD to assure that they were the killer?

Answer: 50

A woman told the cops she killed Beth because [Beth] stole [the woman's] husband ; some drunken men called the cops to assure their guilt, etc.
9. With which weapon was Beth assumed to have been killed?

Answer: A butcher knife

This was assumed by the LAPD.
10. Where was Beth buried?

Answer: California

Even though Elizabeth was born and raised in Mass., she considered California her home and is buried in Oakland.
