Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He was famous for a series of comedic "Road To ..." movies he made with good friend Bing Crosby. Who made the following lovely statement about Christmas? "When we recall Christmas past, we usually find that the simplest things - not the great occasions - give off the greatest glow of happiness."

Answer: Bob Hope

The endlessly amusing Bob Hope was born in England in 1903. He rose to fame as an actor, singer, dancer and writer in the United States, to where he had moved as a young man. Bob, who died in 2003, was also famous for the many tours he gave that lifted the spirits and the corners of the mouth for thousand of service personnel serving overseas.
2. Her surname is almost the same as the place Dorothy wanted to go back to in the 1939 film, "The Wizard of Oz". Who is this woman who made the following lovely remark about Christmas? "At Christmas, all roads lead home."

Answer: Marjorie Holmes

Marjorie Holmes lived from 1910 until 2002. She was a very well known American newspaper columnist and the author of more than 130 books, all of which had a Christian focus. The beautiful expression above reflects the fact that so many families try their hardest to be together at Christmas - that one special time of the year.
3. "Unless we make Christmas an occasion to share our blessings, all the snow in Alaska won't make it 'white'." The singer who gave us the lovely song "White Christmas" gave us that thought provoking Christmas remark as well. Who is he?

Answer: Bing Crosby

Bing Crosby (1903-1977) was an American actor and singer with a beautiful smoothly warm voice who gave the world the lovely song "White Christmas". He first performed it in public in 1941, and then again in the heart-warming movie, the 1942 "Holiday Inn". That song, more than half a century later, is still being printed around this beautiful festive season. Some of its words follow below:

"I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten
and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases... be white".
4. "The holidays are the one time you get to experience all the excitement of rush hour traffic in the mall parking lot." Her surname is the same as a word associated with snow. Who is the comedian who gave us the above Christmas statement?

Answer: Melanie White

I've tried hard to find some information about Melanie White, who is associated with so many comical sayings about Christmas, but sad to say, am getting nowhere, so I apologise for that. It keeps stating that she's a senior lecturer in social theory at the University of Sydney, Australia, but one hardly thinks so.

She lectures on diabetes, obesity and heart disease there - not quite uplifting subjects for a hearty celebration of Christmas. However, the Irish also lay claim to this quick-witted woman. Because of the many instances of her wit, perhaps that is where this amusing comedian belongs.
5. Can you name the American writer with an Irish surname, who gave us the following amusing Christmas statement? "There is a remarkable breakdown of taste and intelligence at Christmas time. Mature, responsible grown men wear neckties made of holly leaves and drink alcoholic beverages with raw egg yolks in them."

Answer: Patrick Jake O'Rourke

Born in 1947, Patrick Jake O'Rourke is a political satirist and popular journalist who writes regularly for various newspapers in the United States. Paddy O'Rourke has also appeared in several movies in cameo roles. His comical statements also include the hilarious "Always read something that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it."
6. "Remember this December, That love weighs more than gold!" This well known American female author who gave us the above sweet Christmas statement, has a name like a famous motor vehicle. Who is she?

Answer: Josephine Dodge

Josephine Dodge (1876-1961) was a very versatile American writer whose works included poetry, non-fiction, serious novels, mystery thrillers and goodness knows which other categories. She was particularly noted in her novels for featuring strong female protagonists. Her lovely remark quoted in this question reflects the more poetic side of Josephine's nature.
7. This writer's wit could be described in the same way as his surname. Can you name the man who made this comical Christmas remark? "The office Christmas party is a great opportunity to catch up with people you haven't seen for twenty minutes."

Answer: Julius Sharpe

Julius Sharpe is a well known American writer and producer, but because of his work behind the scenes, is not a face we would readily recognise. He is particularly noted for his writing skills and involvement in shows such as "The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn", "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson", the 2013 Oscars ceremony, and the two animated series "Family Guy" and "The Cleveland Show".
8. This American comedy writer has a surname similar to a substance many of us put on our fish and chips. Can you name the author of this somewhat acerbic Christmas witticism? "Keep your friends close, your enemies closer, and receipts for all major purchases."

Answer: Bridger Winegar

Like Julius Sharpe, Bridger Winegar is an American writer with a heavy involvements in shows such as "The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn", and "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson". This man with the sharp with is also a minor actor as well in these and other series, roles in which he tends to play himself rather than any specific character.
9. This beautiful Christmas saying is given to us by an author who has been around since the year dot. He or she is ageless in fact. What is this name? "Perhaps the best Yuletide decoration is being wreathed in smiles."

Answer: Anonymous

Good old anonymous. Where would we be without this fine mind. Unfortunately, though, is the fact that the speaker and/or writer of this lovely Christmas remark cannot be credited with same, isn't it? It's so simple and happy, yet somehow brilliantly captures the spirit of this happy time of the year.
10. And here again is the same author. Instead of asking for his or her name, how about trying to complete the comical Christmas saying given to us to chew over instead? "A *WHAT" never voted for an early Christmas."

Answer: Turkey

Very amusing indeed, but also, for our feathered friends, something to be looked forward to with dread. Any turkey hearing the sound of an axe being sharpened at this time of the year, should run for its life.

There is another saying, rather long, that I came across while looking up these Christmas quotes. It's rather sad though. It's from someone known only as Hillary. I'll leave you with it, wishing and hoping that you never experience this profound sense of loneliness for this or any other Christmas in your life:

"You might be sitting in your living room, smiling because it's Christmas... but you're really depressed. You might be laughing at this ridiculous sweater that your grandpa got... but you're really crying inside. And it's because you didn't get want you really wanted for Christmas... That one person you love."
