After the store employee called the police, the pair were stopped in their car. The discovery of a weapon within the car led to Lake's arrest. Lake committed suicide by taking cyanide tablets while in custody. This led police to investigate his property where human remains were found.

Charles Ng fled to Canada. One year later he was arrested for shoplifting again. After serving time in a Canadian prison, the US authorities appealed for his extradition. It took 14 long years for Ng to be convicted for the crimes that were uncovered in 1985.
