1. Which actor / actress, who plays one of the main characters of the soap 'Coronation Street' was born in Basford, Nottinghamshire in 1932?

Answer: William Roache (Ken Barlow)

William Roache (b. 1932) was raised in Ilkeston and is one of the original cast members of the soap that first appeared on television in 1960.

In 2000, he was awarded a lifetime achievement award and the following year an MBE.
2. Which actor who appeared as James Bond spent his formative years in Derbyshire?

Answer: Timothy Dalton

Born in Colwyn Bay, Wales Dalton moved to Belper, Derbyshire and attended Herbert Strutt Grammar School.

He appeared twice as James Bond, in 'The Living Daylights' (1987) and 'Licence to Kill' (1989).

Answer: Anthony Babington

Although in public the Babington family accepted the Protestant faith they were in fact ardent Catholics and supported the cause to replace Elizabeth with Mary on the English throne.

For anybody who knows Derby, Babington Hall is on the corner of St Peters Street and Babington Lane and currently houses Waterstones the Booksellers.

Bodell actually had only a 5 month reign as Heavyweight Boxing Champion. After beating Joe Bugner in 15 rounds he was in line for a fight against Muhammad Ali but unfortunately lost his next fight against Jerry Quarry in 64 seconds and his career went downhill from there.
5. Which Reverend was born in Derby and founded Boston, Massachusetts?

Answer: Reverend John Cotton

The eldest son of a Derby lawyer John went to Cambridge University at 14 and was ordained in 1610. As a minister he refused to administer many of the rituals and ceremonies saying they owed little to the scriptures. He encouraged Puritans to find a home in the New World and left himself in 1633.

He chose the fledgling community of Boston where he became largely responsible for the way religion was practiced.

Elizabeth Hardwick (Bess of Hardwick) was born around 1521 near Bolsover and by the end of her life owned huge estates, a wide range of businesses and industrial interests. She was also a very astute politician and Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Elizabeth I. She amassed her fortune through her four marriages.

Knowles was born at the Derby City Hospital in 1937 and attended Bemrose School. In 1954 he appeared as 'Henry V' in the annual Shakespeare production.

Arthur Lowe had been a bit actor for a number of years before being offered the role of Captain Mainwaring in "Dad's Army". The BBC weren't convinced and offered the role to two other actors before settling on Lowe. History would prove of course that it was the right decision.

Answer: William Mompesson

The local tailor George Viccars took a delivery of cloth from London in early May 1665. Because it was damp he laid it by the fire to dry and it is thought this is how the plague arrived in village of Eyam. Through the work of the Reverend William Mompesson who persuded the villagers to stay together for fear of spreading the plague far and wide it was contained within the village but at a very high price - only 83 out of 350 survived.
