He changed his name to Diamond when he was a student at Columbia University. He started writing screenplays in 1944, but teamed up with Wilder in 1956. Their first screenplay was "Love in the Afternoon" (1956), for which they won a Writers Guild Award. Diamond and Wilder won the Academy Award for Best Screenplay for "The Apartment" (1960); the film also won Best Picture and Best Director for Wilder. Diamond and Wilder were nominated for the Oscar for their scripts for "Some Like it Hot" (1959) and "The Fortune Cookie" (1966).

They wrote a dozen films over 25 years.
