Bram van der Stok (1915-1993) was a Dutch prisoner in Stalag Luft III in 1944. During the night of 24-25 March 1944, he was one of the 76 prisoners who managed to escape from the camp. Although the escape had been meticulously planned the 77th escaper was spotted by a camp sentry and it was therefore possible for the Germans to raise the alarm some hours earlier than expected.
Seventy-three of the escapers were recaptured, some fairly quickly, others later; and Hitler had fifty of them shot. (This was a gross violation of the laws of war).
