Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our first guest is a playwright and poet. He is world famous and his birthday was St George's Day. He wows Calpurnia by comparing her to a summer's day. Who was he?

Answer: William Shakespeare

What is there to say about Shakespeare that hasn't already been said? Generally regarded as the greatest English playwright his birthday was 23rd April, which is also St. George's day. St George is the patron saint of England.

Shakespeare's plays have been translated into virtually every language, and continue to be extensively performed. Many have been modernised or made into musicals very successfully.
2. Calpurnia loves Tudor history, so our next guest is the man who built Hampton Court Palace. Who was he?

Answer: Thomas Wolsey

Thomas Wolsey was Lord Chancellor to King Henry VIII, and also rose to be a Cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church. He was also Archbishop of York. His downfall came when he failed to persuade the Pope to grant Henry a divorce from Catherine of Aragon. Stripped of his power and properties he was accused of treason.

He fell ill and died at Leicester, on his way to London to face the charges against him.
3. Calpurnia wants to learn more about Scotland, so we've invited a Scottish King who defeated the English at Bannockburn to talk to her. Who was he?

Answer: Robert the Bruce

Robert the Bruce defeated King Edward II of England at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, and in doing so ensured his place as one of Scotland's great heroes. After this victory he launched raids into England whilst simultaneously pursuing diplomatic solutions. In 1328 King Edward II signed a declaration recognising Scotland as an independent nation and Robert the Bruce as King of Scotland.

He died in 1329. His body is buried in Dunfermline Abbey, but his heart is buried in Melrose Abbey.
4. Calpurnia is interested in the Sutton Hoo Treasure, so we've invited the man who found it to talk to her. What is his name?

Answer: Basil Brown

Sutton Hoo in Suffolk is the site of an Anglo-Saxon burial ground. Prior to 1938 there had been some desultory attempts at excavation, but it was not until Mrs Pretty, owner of the property, engaged Basil Brown to carry out a proper excavation of the site that the full extent became apparent.

It was he who uncovered the complete Anglo Saxon-ship burial during his 1939 excavations. The priceless treasures unearthed are now on show in the British Museum and Sutton Hoo itself belongs to the National Trust.
5. We think Calpurnia would like fly fishing if she ever got the chance to try it. The man who wrote "The Compleat Angler" is here to try and convince her to give it a go. Who was he?

Answer: Izaac Walton

"The Compleat Angler" was first published in 1653 and has been in print virtually ever since. It is one of the three most published books in the English language, the other two being the Bible and the "Complete Works of Shakespeare". Walton is buried in Winchester Cathedral.
6. Coming from Australia, Calpurnia is not keen on the cold. We have the first man to reach the South Pole here to tell her how to cope with it. Can you name him?

Answer: Roald Amundsen

Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian Antarctic explorer. He was the first to reach the South Pole, beating Robert Falcon Scott by about two months. He was also the first person to reach both North and South Poles. He, Scott and Shackleton were the early pioneers of Antarctic exploration. Amundsen disappeared in 1928 whilst on a rescue mission to find survivors from an airship that had crashed returning from the North Pole.

Although parts of his plane were found his body never was.
7. Calpurnia has a weakness for dogs. To show her how to get the best out of a dog we have a famous English dog trainer. Lets hope she doesn't tell her to "Walkies" or "Sit". Who was this lady?

Answer: Barbara Woodhouse

Barbara Woodhouse became an unlikely television star in the 1980s when her series "Training Dogs the Woodhouse Way" became very popular. She had a no nonsense approach to dog training, and firmly believed that there are no bad dogs, only bad owners. Her trademark commands were "walkies" and "sit".
8. Our dinner for Calpurnia wouldn't be complete without a handsome movie star, but who to invite? We settle on a man who will create a "Perfect Storm" of emotions. Who have we invited?

Answer: George Clooney

George Clooney rose to fame in the long running series, "ER". His good looks and popularity meant that Hollywood soon came calling, and he has since starred in a string of hit films including "Ocean's 11", "Batman and Robin" and "Brother, Where Art Thou". He is the nephew of famous singer Rosemary Clooney.
9. We need someone to serenade the birthday girl, and who better than this fabulous British tenor. Winner of the first series of Britain's Got Talent, our invitee is?

Answer: Paul Potts

When he entered Britain's Got Talent Paul Potts was working as a salesman in a mobile phone store, dreaming of better things. He impressed both the judges and the television audience with his rendition of "Nessun Dorma" and went on to win the whole series. Since then he has performed all over the world and has had a successful recording career.
10. We can't let the party end without a birthday cake. Wheeling it in for Calpurnia is a celebrity chef noted for his bad language, but he has promised to be on his best behaviour tonight. Who is he?

Answer: Gordon Ramsay

Gordon Ramsay is one of leaders of the celebrity chefs who have graced our television screens in recent years. His programmes have become famous for featuring both his fiery temper and bad language.
