He was a great military strategist and invaded many European nations, but after failing in his invasion of Russia in 1812, he was exiled to Elba. He briefly returned to France after escaping from Elba in 1815, but following his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, he was exiled to Saint Helena where he wrote his book.

He died on Saint Helena in 1821.
