Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mata Hari was an exotic dancer who was executed after being accused of being a spy for Germany in which of the following wars?

Answer: World War I

Margaretha Zelle, also known as Mata Hari, was a Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan who was executed by the French at the end of World War I. Believed by many to have been a double agent, she was accused of providing information to the Germans that led to the deaths of over 50,000 men. Her guilt is hotly debated by war historians.
2. How did the American government become aware of John Anthony Walker's activities?

Answer: His disgruntled ex-wife turned him in

John Anthony Walker was an American Navy officer who pleaded guilty to being a spy for Russia from 1968-1985. His activities were found out, when after refusing to pay his ex-wife any alimony, she turned him into the FBI. During these years of the Cold War he recruited his son into spying for the Russians also. Everyone in his spy ring was caught and everyone other than his son was given a life term in prison.

His son was given 25 years. He found out that there is some truth to the old saying that goes something like this "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned".
3. With the backing of the German Nazis, Vidkun Quisling took over the role of Prime Minister of which northern European country?

Answer: Norway

Vidkun Quisling was a native Norwegian politician who took over his country and assumed the role of Prime Minister in 1942 with the support of the German Nazi occupation force. Quisling moved into the Royal Palace and promoted Nazi propaganda. At the end of the war Quisling and his associates were arrested.

He was executed by firing squad for embezzlement, murder, and high treason. His name became synonym of traitor and the term is still used today.
4. Aldrich Ames was an American CIA agent who was found guilty in 1994 for spying for the Soviet Union.

Answer: True

At the time of his arrest, Aldrich Ames had compromised more CIA operations than anyone in history. His betrayal cost the lives of at least a dozen men. The CIA came under heavy criticism for the length of time it took them to catch Ames in spite of obvious hints that he was up to something.

The biggest give away was his life style that was far above his salary with the agency. He blamed his actions on his first wife who drove him to spy for money to pay her clothing bills. To avoid execution, he pleaded guilty at his trial and was given a life sentence.
5. Mary Surratt was hanged in 1865 after being convicted of treason for her role in which of the following incidents?

Answer: The assassination of Abraham Lincoln

George Atzerodt, Lewis Powell, David Herold and Mary Surratt were all hanged for their treasonous participation in the Lincoln assassination. Upon her conviction and hanging Mary Surratt became the first woman executed by the United States federal government. Attendance at the execution of these four was limited to 1,000 people and was photographed by Alexander Gardner.
6. Rosalie Thompson was a Canadian native who spied for the Japanese and was known as Tokyo Rose.

Answer: False

Tokyo Rose was a generic nickname give to a dozen or so Japanese women who broadcast Japanese propaganda over the radio in English during World War II. Japanese-American Iva Toguri D'Aquino is probably the female most associated with the name. After the war she was charged with treason for giving comfort and aid to the Imperial Government of Japan.

She was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years in prison. After her release from prison she spent the rest of her life living in the country she betrayed, passing away in 2006 in Chicago, Illinois.
7. By which moniker was traitor William Joyce better known?

Answer: Lord Haw Haw

William Joyce was born in the U.S. and raised in Ireland. During World War II he broadcast Nazi propaganda on the radio program "Germany Calling" under the nickname of Lord Haw Haw. While he was not the only man to hold this job and use this nickname, he is probably the most infamous.

His conviction for high treason was controversial as he was not actually a British citizen. However, he travelled to Germany just before the outbreak of World War II on a British passport obtained under false pretences.

In the words of one of the judges, he went to Germany 'wrapped in the Union Jack'. He was hanged in January 1946.
8. Julius Caesar could tell you that which of these men is one of the most famous traitors in history?

Answer: Brutus

Marcus Junius Brutus is usually known simply as Brutus and has gone down in history as one of the most infamous traitors in history. Brutus was a Roman politician who was greatly favored by Julius Caesar. He is most well-known for his activities as a leader in the successful plot to assassinate Caesar.

While intricate details about the entire incident are debated by historians, all conclude that Brutus carried out a very active role.
9. John Walker Lindh was an American traitor who associated himself with which one of the following options?

Answer: The Taliban

John Walker Lindh fought with the Taliban against the United States during the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan. He was captured with other members of Al-Qaeda and imprisoned. He was aware of an uprising and escape attempt that was being planned and ultimately left several hundred people dead. He was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for his terrorist activities.
10. Which married couple were the first civilians executed by the United States after they were found guilty of espionage in 1951?

Answer: Ethel and Julius Rosenberg

Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were executed in the electric chair at Sing-Sing prison in New York after they were found guilty of passing information about the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union. The Rosenbergs were firm believers in communism, and there is no doubt that Julius Rosenberg did pass on information to the Soviet Union.

There are those who have argued as to the information that was passed on and if it was of any value. There are also those who debate the guilt of Ethel Rosenberg. Their verbal and open support of communism did not help them during their trial and their supporters declared that the trial was a form of political persecution.
