Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bruce
Answer: Martial arts
Bruce Lee was instrumental in bringing martial arts as a sport as well as a source of entertainment in countless films. He was born in San Francisco but grew up in China. His dual citizenship enhanced his career, particularly in films. He was Kato in the "Green Hornet" television series (1966-1967). He died of overuse of cortisone in 1973.
2. Brenda
Answer: I'm Sorry
Brenda Lee will forever be the 'little girl with the big voice'. By the age of ten her singing voice was the breadwinner for her family after her father's death. Her "Rockin' Round the Christmas Tree" (1958) rises to one of the most heard songs of the holiday season. Her signature song is "I'm Sorry" (1960) a number one hit when she was 15.
"I'm sorry, so sorry
That I was such a fool
I didn't know
Love could be so cruel
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh
Oh, yes
You tell me mistakes
Are part of being young
But that don't right
The wrong that's been done
(I'm sorry) I'm sorry
(So sorry) So sorry
Please accept my apology
But love is blind
And I was too blind to see
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh
Oh, yes".
3. Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee
Answer: Revolutionary War
Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee was a Princeton Law graduate who chose to enter military service at the outset of the Revolutionary War. He commanded a calvary unit that fought what today would be called guerrilla warfare including mobile attack raids, reconnaissance, and surveillance. So adept was he that he earned the nickname "light horse' for his ability to mount and use horses in combat.
He was the father of Robert E. Lee, a confederate general in the American Civil War.
4. Harper
Answer: Mockingbird
"To Kill a Mockingbird"(1960) was Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize winning novel and standard reading in many high schools. It received widespread acclaim over the years. In 2015 after 65 years she published "Go Set a Watchman". Although publisher's promoted the book as a sequel to 'Mockingbird', it was actually the first draft written in 1957. For the most part readers were disappointed. For instance, Atticus Finch is a brave enlightened knight in 'Mockingbird' but a go-along segregationist in 'Watchman'.
Truman Capote was a childhood friend of Harper Lee and appears as 'Dill' in 'Mockingbird'. She was also a secretary to Capote.
5. Stan
Answer: Comic books
Stan Lee nee Stanley Martin Lieber is an American comic-book writer, editor, film executive producer, actor, and publisher. He was editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, publisher and chairman before leaving the company to become its chairman emeritus and a member of the editorial board.
His creative talents lead to the development of classic comic strip super heroes including Spider-Man, the Hulk, Doctor Strange, the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Black Panther, the X-Men, Ant-Man, Iron Man, and Thor.
6. Peggy
Answer: Is That All There Is?
Preparing for this question, I researched YouTube to refresh myself on the magic of Peggy Lee. Not many popular singers take the time to not only sing the words but try to make you understand them. As a result I spent the better part of an hour mesmerized. Rather than a laundry list of 'biggest hits', let's concentrate on "Is That All There is?"
Peggy laments her disappointment first in a fire, then the circus, and finally love. Then sings the haunting chorus. The song ends:
"I know what you must be saying to yourselves
"If that's the way she feels about it
Why doesn't she just end it all"
Oh, no, not me
I'm in no hurry for that final disappointment
Cause I know just as well as I'm standing here talking to you
That when that final moment comes and I'm breathing my last breath
I'll be saying to myself
Is that all there is
Is that all there is
If that's all there is, my friends
Then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is".
7. Pinky
Answer: Comedian
Comedians come and go. Pinky Lee wended his way through vaudeville and burlesque to become a popular television star and host. In 1950 He hosted a variety show. He co-starred in "Those Two" a sitcom with Vivian Blaine. In 1954 He developed his own children show. In 1955 Pinky Lee collapsed on live television. At first it was thought to be part of his act but was later diagnosed as a reaction to an infection. However, not having a replacement for him, the live show was cancelled. Rumors flew. One was that he had died; the other was that he had been institutionalized. Lee was never able to regain his status.
Lee died in 1993 of a heart attack and had devoted his time to unsuccessful tries to return to television and music theater. His catch phase was "Oh! You make me so mad!" He opened his programs with:
"Yoo hoo, it's me,
My name is Pinky Lee.
I skip and run with lots of fun
For every he and she.
It's plain to see
That you can tell it's me
With my checkered hat
And my checkered coat,
The funny giggle in my throat
And my silly dance
Like a billy goat."
8. Robert E.
Answer: Civil War
Son of General Henry Lee, Robert E. Lee was a West Point graduate and later Superintendent of the United States Military Academy. He distinguished himself during the Mexican War. With the advent the American Civil War, he was offered commissions in both the Union and Confederate Armies but chose to serve with his native Virginians.
Although he spoke out against the institution of slavery, he was quite strict with the slaves on his plantation. He represented the Confederacy official surrender at Appomattox in 1865.
After the war he became President of William and Mary University.
9. Ang
Answer: Director "Life of Pi"
Ang Lee was born in Taiwan but was a University of Illinois graduate. After directing films in China, he came to Hollywood and has directed a host of well received and honored feature films. As director he won two Academy Awards for his work "Brokeback Mountain"(2005) and "Life of Pi"(2012).
In 1999 his "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" had ten Academy Award nominations. Lee is hard to define as his other successes "The Ice Storm" (1997), "Hulk" (2002), "Sense and Sensibility" (1995)--a family drama, a comic book hero, and a 19th century romantic novel.
10. Judy
Answer: Martial arts
Chia Ling was born in Taiwan and at an early age was apprenticed to the Peking Opera for seven years. However, because of her natural beauty and athleticism, at age 18 she was recruited to appear in martial arts films. Unknown to her, her manager and the producers of the films made the outrageous claim that 'Judy Lee' was the sister of Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee had sisters but Chia Ling was not one of them. Even after the deceit was uncovered, films still starred Judy Lee, especially when shown outside China.
Many of her sixty films between 1972 and 1996 films have been lost or surviving copies are in poor condition, thus they have become collector's items.
