Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the young lady recognized for introducing the sport jeude paume to the United States in 1874?

Answer: Outerbridge

"Jeude paume" comes from the Greek "sphairistike", commonly known as 'lawn tennis' today.
2. Which of these individuals was an early Christian theologian who was active in Alexandria?

Answer: Origen

Origen ensured his celibacy by castrating himself...ouch!
3. Who was the mathematician recognized for actually creating the Geometric-coordinate system credited to Rene Descartes?

Answer: Oresme

Oresme also anticipated Copernicus' work by several hundred years, teaching that the solar system was sun-centered through the use of mathematics. Unfortunately, this fellow's work simply wasn't well disseminated or highly influential, though it's highly probably that Descartes got a hold of a copy of his work prior to the 'creation' of his cartesian coordinate system.
4. Whose text was used as the authoritative history reference during the Middle Ages?

Answer: Orosius

It was called the "Historiarum Adversus Paganes". Paulus Orosius was a 4th century church historian and theoratician from the Iberian Peninsula.
5. Name the charming Baroness wrote the "Scarlet Pimpernel", set in the time of the French Revolution.

Answer: Orczy

The hero of her work is Sir Percy Blakeney, who rescues victims of the French Frevolution. The Baroness was originally from Hungary, but wrote her tales in English! Thank you for attempting this very tough quiz, I hope you performed well...
