Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pierre, Irene, and Marie may look like a typical family from the late 1800's, however, both parents are rather famous for their scientific discoveries and for the fact that they shared a Nobel Prize. What is their last name?

Answer: Curie

Marie moved to France to study at the University of Paris, and met Pierre through a mutual friend who thought Pierre might be able to find more lab space for Marie's studies. At the time Pierre was an instructor at the School of Physics and Chemistry. Marie did not accept his marriage proposal at first, but realized he was very serious when he said that he would move back to Poland with her if necessary.

They were married in 1895, and had a daughter, Irene, in 1897. In 1904 a second daughter, Eve, joined the family. Tragically, Pierre was killed in a street accident in 1906.

He fell under a moving cart, and died instantly when his skull was crushed. Together they discovered radium and polonium, and won the Nobel Prize in Physics with Henri Becquerel in 1903.
2. Shown posing for an engagement picture, this couple became the last czar and czarina of Russia. His name is Nicholas II. What is her name?

Answer: Alexandra

Nicholas was the son of Czar Alexander III, and the heir to the throne of Russia. Alexandra was a minor German princess. They met when she was in Russia visiting her sister in 1889. At first the idea of a marriage between the two was not popular. Alexandra wasn't really all that wealthy, and she was a Protestant.

In 1894, Nicholas petitioned his father for permission to marry, and they were married a week after Alexander III fell ill and died. Unfortunately for Nicholas, he was not prepared to carry the burden of rule as his father had. Together he and his bride had five children, and together they were all assassinated by Russian revolutionaries in 1918.
3. After meeting in 1953, this couple was cast together to do the movie, "The Long Hot Summer" in 1957, and married in 1958. He is Paul Newman. What is his wife's name?

Answer: Joanne Woodward

Joanne once said, "Paul and I were good friends before we were lovers. We really liked each other. We could talk to each other, we could tell each other anything without fear of ridicule or rejection. There was trust". Paul said, "I have steak at home. Why go out for hamburger"? They appeared together in eleven feature films, and were married for fifty years until Newman's death in 2008.
4. This wife, whose maiden name was Mary Todd, was so distressed by her husband's untimely death that she wore black for the rest of her life. In addition, her son eventually had her committed because of her strange, erratic behavior. Who was her beloved husband?

Answer: Lincoln

Mary, aged 23, and Abraham, aged 33, were married in 1842. Together they had four sons; only two of the sons survived adulthood and only one outlived her. Mary faced much sadness during her life. Many members of her family served the Confederacy during the Civil War; her loyalty to the Union was constantly questioned. Two of her sons died at a very young age.

She suffered from migraine headaches and depression. The death of her husband was more than she could bear. She died in 1882, after spending the last years of her life in an asylum, with her sister, and traveling in Europe.
5. This famous couple are country music legends. The husband, Johnny Cash, kept a to-do list that reminded him to kiss his wife. What was her name?

Answer: June Carter

The next reminder on his list was "don't kiss anyone else"! Johnny and June met backstage at the Grand Ole Opry and married thirteen years later. It was his second marriage and her third. One child blessed this union, and they and toured and worked together for thirty-five years. Both passed away in 2003 within four months of each other.
6. Who is this famous couple? They were first cousins. She was Queen, and he was the Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. When he died at the age of forty-two, the Queen went into deep mourning for the rest of her life.

Answer: Victoria and Albert

Victoria lived as a widow for forty more years, and wore black mourning clothes the entire time. Albert's chambers in all their homes were kept exactly as they were before his death; hot water continued to be brought in every morning and the linens and towels were changed every day. Victoria withdrew to a great degree from public life until the celebration of her Golden and Diamond Jubilees (in 1887 and 1897).

There were so many memorials built to remember Albert, that Charles Dickens is said to have told one of his friends that he sought an "inaccessible cave" to escape from them.
7. This lady was married to King Henry VIII. She is his only consort who was given a queen's burial, and the only wife to be buried beside him. What is her name?

Answer: Jane Seymour

Jane Seymour gave birth to the future Edward VI, Henry's only legitimate male heir who survived infancy. Sadly she died a few days later from what people believe were complications of childbirth. Henry wore black for three months after she died, and refrained from marriage for three years.

Although history counts six wives, Henry himself believed he had only had two valid marriages: the one to Jane and the one to his last wife, Catherine Parr. If Jane had survived, would Henry have found a reason to discard her? We'll never know!
8. During which war did Mary Ludwig Hays reportedly take over her husband's place swabbing and loading the cannon when he fainted from heat exhaustion?

Answer: American Revolution

After their marriage, William Hays enlisted in Proctor's 4th Pennsylvania Artillery, and Mary joined a woman's group led by Martha Washington. The group would make food, comfort the sick and injured, help wherever necessary, and serve as water girls, (the men would call Molly Pitcher) when water was needed. Mary even followed her husband to Valley Forge during that terrible winter of 1777.

At the end of the war, Mary and William returned home, where they lived until his death.
9. Which famous Biblical couple am I describing? They were first cousins, He worked for her father, Laban, before he was allowed to marry her.

Answer: Jacob and Rachel

Jacob fell in love with Rachel and agreed to work for her father for seven years in order to win her hand in marriage. On his wedding night, unbeknown to him, Rachel was substituted with her older sister, Leah. Laban, their father, said the older sister should be married before the younger sister, and Jacob was allowed to marry Rachel after the seven-day wedding week with Leah.

He then worked for seven more years. Jacob fathered sons by Leah and two servants before Rachel was able to conceive and give birth to Joseph, who became Jacob's favorite son. Between the four women, Jacob fathered twelve sons, which began the lineage of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, and one daughter.
10. Meet Mumtaz Mahal, who was married at the age of nineteen to her husband, Prince Khurram. Together they had fourteen children; she died while giving birth to their last. What is her husband's better known imperial name?

Answer: Shah Jahan

Although he had other wives, Mumtaz Mahal was his favorite. She was consulted by her husband on affairs of state, and was even responsible for the imperial seal, which means she was able to review official documents and make suggestions on changes. After the death of Mumtaz Mahal, Shah Jahan began the construction of the famous tomb, the Taj Mahal, which took twenty years to build. Upon his death, he was buried next to his beloved Mumtaz Mahal.
