Gabriel Garcia Marquez was born in 1928 in Aracataca, a small town in northern Colombia, located between the mountains and the Caribbean Sea.

Marquez attended a law school at the National University of Bogota. After the Bogota university was closed in 1948, he went to the university in Cartagena and started working as a journalist in order to support himself.
