Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Marcel's brothers were also artists.

Answer: True

Gaston Duchamp took the alias Joseph Villon and Raymond was a sculptor.
2. Duchamp is best known for his painting 'Nude Descending A Staircase' (it influenced the Italian Futurists). At what 1913 New York art exhibit did it gain notoriety?

Answer: the Armory Show

The Armory Show was one of the first showings of European modern art in America. Called an 'explosion in a shingle factory', Duchamp's painting caused a sensation.
3. When did Marcel Duchamp stop painting, and what was the title of his last canvas?

Answer: T'um, 1918

The title is a contraction for the French for 'you bore me', which Duchamp obviously felt about painting by then. From then on the bulk of his work was Dada objects.
4. Duchamp became known for his 'Readymades', ordinary objects he wrenched out of their normal context under the guise of 'art'. Name the one object below that is NOT a 'Readymade'?

Answer: Pez dispenser

Duchamp never used a Pez dispenser as a 'Readymade'. The others are, though, along with such objects as a hat rack and bottle dryer.
5. What French poet was alluded to in one of Marcel Duchamp's works?

Answer: Apollinaire

Guilliame Apollinaire, one of the poets who influenced the Dadaists, was paid homage by Duchamp in his 'Apolinère Enameled', a metal ad for Sapolin paint that Duchamp altered.
6. On what reproduction of a famous artwork did Marcel Duchamp draw a moustache?

Answer: Mona Lisa

Duchamp's version of the Leonardo masterpiece, 'L.H.O.O.Q.' caused a scandal among art worshippers. He never touched the Gainsborough, Lawrence and Munch works.
7. What game became Marcel Duchamp's hobby in his later years?

Answer: Chess

Duchamp became obsessed with the game, often playing with his close friend, American artist Man Ray.
8. What did Marcel Duchamp call his transvestite alter ego?

Answer: Rrose Selavy

The name was a pun on 'eros, c'est la vie'. At first, Catholic Duchamp wanted a Jewish identity, but found changing gender was easier.
9. Name the film Marcel Duchamp shot of his optical devices.

Answer: Anemic Cinema

Duchamp's work in optical effects was the foundation for much of the Op Art of the 60's. The title, of course, is anagrammatic.
10. What U.S. city has the largest collection of Duchamp's work in the USA, including his last artwork?

Answer: Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Museum of Art holds the biggest U.S. colection of Duchamp works, including his last, 'Given', an assemblage consisting of the mannikin of a naked woman behind an old wood door with peepholes in it.
