Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How old was Marie Antoinette when she married the young Dauphin?

Answer: 14

While by today's standards, this was young, royal couples were often promised in marriage at as early as infancy. The Dauphin and future king of France was but fifteen when they married.
2. What nationality was Marie Antoinette?

Answer: Austrian

Marie Antoinette was Austrian by birth. When she went to France for her marriage, she underwent a symbolic change of nationality on crossing the French border. Among other things she had to change her clothes in front of assembled courtiers!
3. Complete this famous quote: "Let them eat______!"

Answer: cake

There is no firm evidence that she said this, and even if she did, it may not have been intended maliciously. However, the usual interpretation is that it was frivolous indifference to the plight of the poor.
4. The young Dauphin and Dauphine's marriage was graced with children immediately.

Answer: False

Seven years after they were married the royal couple had their first child. Many theories have sprung up regarding the reasons for this wait. Some speculate that the Dauphin had a genital deformity that prevented intercourse. Others believe the young Dauphin was too shy.
5. Marie Antoinette and King Louis XV's mistress, Madame Du Barry:

Answer: hated each other

Du Barry believed herself superior to the young Dauphine, and vice versa. The Dauphine, required by her rank to speak to the king's mistress, refused to do so for a long time. In the end, Marie Antoinette settled on remarking casually, "There are a lot of people at Versailles today, aren't there?" before moving on.
6. Marie Antoinette was not crowned with her husband.

Answer: True

While Louis Auguste, her husband, was crowned Louis XVI on June 11, 1775, Marie Antoinette accompanied him to the coronation, but was not crowned as his consort.
7. What was the affectionate term for Marie Antoinette's daughter, Marie Therese Charlotte?

Answer: Madame Royale

Madame Fille du Roi, or Madame Royale was born on December 19, 1778, in front of the entire French Court. The labor was long and difficult. The girl's paternity was the subject of gossip among everyone but the King.
8. Marie Antoinette had this built so she could play at being a peasant. What was it?

Answer: village

At the time, playing at being peasants or shepherds and shepherdesses was a popular hobby among some aristocrats. The village, while popular among other royals, was exceedingly expensive, and added to the Queen's increasing unpopularity among the French people.
9. The first of Marie Antoinette's children to die was a girl.

Answer: True

Sophie Helene Beatrice died in her early infancy in 1787. Her death occured while a portrait of her mother and siblings and her was being painted. She was painted out of the picture and her cradle was draped in black.
10. Marie Antoinette died in this way.

Answer: Guillotined

At 12:15 pm on October 16, 1793 Marie Antoinette was publicly guillotined. Her body was thrown into an unmarked grave. It was not until 1815 that she and her husband were buried at St. Denis Basilica.
