Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of Irvine Welsh's first novel, which would form the basis for a 1996 movie that starred Ewan McGregor and Robert Carlyle and dealt with heroin use?

Answer: Trainspotting

Legend has it that Welsh wrote 'Trainspotting' during breaks while he was putting together a thesis at Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, Scotland) on equal opportunity for women. The film adaptation of the novel helped push the book into prominence and it has since developed a cult following. Welsh has since written a sequel to the story, 'Porno', released in 2002, and a prequel, 'Skagboys', scheduled for release in 2012.

As well as novels Welsh has also written a number of stage plays as well as the musical 'Blackpool'.

A versatile character he has collaborated on screenplays and directed some short films.
2. Matt Welsh is an Australian swimmer who was a world record holder in which stroke?

Answer: Butterfly

Matt secured gold medals at World Championship events in two disciplines, butterfly and backstroke. In all he has won five gold medals at the 'Worlds' and collected three silver medals and a bronze. The gold medal proved elusive to him at the Olympic Games with his best result being a silver medal behind Lenny Krayzelburg at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
3. 'The Place of Dead Roads', dedicated to English writer Denton Welch, was written by which prominent figure of the 'Beat Generation'?

Answer: William S. Burroughs

Though he died at the age of 33 from complications brought about by spinal tuberculosis, Welch's work is described as being tinted with genius. Painting was Denton's first joy and it's with the eyes of an artist that he intimately captured the English landscape within his writing.

His stories of cloistered worlds are described as intense with a close attention to aesthetics. Burroughs has commented that Welch was a profound influence on his own work.
4. Bob Welch, whose solo charting singles included 'Ebony Eyes' and 'Sentimental Lady', was a former member of which super-group?

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

Bob was a member of Fleetwood Mac between the years 1971 and 1974. During this time he was involved in the creation of five of the band's albums, the most prominent being the 1974 release 'Heroes Are Hard to Find'. Nineteen of the songs he wrote appeared on these albums.

A version of 'Sentimental Lady' appears on the band's 1972 release 'Bare Trees'. Welch would release a revamped version of this song on his debut solo album 'French Kiss' (1977). As a single, the song reached #8 on the US Billboard charts.
5. Bo Welch made his directorial debut with which 2003 movie that starred Mike Myers and was based on a book by Dr Seuss?

Answer: The Cat In the Hat

Bo Welch is a noted production designer who has worked closely with Tim Burton on movies such as 'Edward Scissorhands', 'Batman Returns' and 'Beetlejuice'. His work has seen him nominated for Set and Art Direction Academy Awards for the films 'Men in Black', 'The Birdcage', 'The Little Princess' and 'The Color Purple'. Unfortunately for Bo, 'The Cat in the Hat' met with predominantly negative reviews and struggled to recoup its $100 million budget.
6. Jack Welch is an American businessman who, at one time, was the CEO of which multinational conglomeration that Forbes magazine rated as the second largest in the world in 2010?

Answer: General Electric Company

Jack earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering and then commenced work with GE in 1960 as junior engineer. In his early days he managed to blow the roof off the factory, which nearly saw his employment terminated. Despite this, within 12 years he was Vice President of the company and in 1981 he became its youngest chairman and CEO.

He immediately began to streamline the company's operation and disbanded its nine-layer management hierarchy. He continually put pressure on his management team to seek ways to be more productive, firing the bottom 10% each 12 months and rewarding the top 20% with options and bonuses. 'Fortune' magazine declared him the 'Manager of the Century' and when he left GE the company's market value had risen from $26.8 billion to $410 billion.
7. Greg Welch was the 1990 World Champion in which multi disciplined sporting event?

Answer: Triathlon

At one stage described as the fittest man in the world, Greg Welch is considered the greatest triathlete of his time, winning 100 of the 300 races he competed in. He was a short price favourite to win the triathlon gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics but was diagnosed with ventricular tachycardia, a condition that pushes the heart beat to excessive states when placed in a high adrenalin environment, that forced him into an early retirement. Greg's achievements in the sport include becoming the first non-American male to win the Hawaiian Ironman, as well as being the first man to win triathlon's 'Grand Slam' - the ITU Triathlon World Championships (1990), the Ironman World Championship (1994), the Long Course Triathlon World Championship (1994) and the ITU Duathlon World Championship (1993).

Note: A Duathlon involves a running leg followed by a cycling leg and another running leg. A Biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross country skiing with rifle shooting.
8. Bruce Welch co-wrote the song 'The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt' as a member of which band that used to support Cliff Richard?

Answer: The Shadows

Welch is predominantly known for his time as a member of The Shadows. He teamed up with Hank Marvin and formed The Geordie Boys before the pair joined an outfit called The Drifters. The Drifters would move on to become The Shadows. Welch also released songs in his own right though these were not overly successful. Possibly his best performing song was 'Please Mr. Please', which was released as a single by his fiancé, at the time, Olivia Newton-John, reaching number three on the Billboard Charts in 1975.

In the 2004 Queen's Honours List he was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for his services to the music industry.
9. Raquel Welch posed in an animal skin bikini to promote which 1966 UK film loosely set during the time of cavemen?

Answer: One Million Years B.C.

This iconic poster would become one of the best ever selling show bills and it helped promote Raquel as a 'sex symbol' during the 1960's and 70's. Raquel's ancestry, on her mother's side, can be traced back to John Quincy Adams and further back to the 'Mayflower'.

Her early work involved minor roles and appearances in television programmes such as 'Bewitched' and 'McHale's Navy'. The big break came with a prominent role in the 1966 science fiction drama 'Fantastic Voyage' alongside Stephen Boyd. To prove that there was more to her acting than merely looks, Raquel garnered praise for her performance in 'The Three Musketeers' (1973), which also earned her a Golden Globe.
10. One of the 'Big Four' founding professors of Baltimore's John Hopkins Hospital, William Henry Welch was primarily noted for his work in which field?

Answer: Pathology

He discovered the organism that causes gas gangrene, was the founding editor of the 'Journal of Experimental Medicine' and President of the American Medical Association (AMA).

The library at John Hopkins Hospital was named in his honour in 1929 as was Welch Road, situated near the Stanford University Medical Centre in California.
