Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the morning of Tuesday, April 20, 1999, two teenagers entered Columbine High School, with the intent to do bodily harm to their fellow students. The two young men entered through the cafeteria and began firing. What were the names of the two young murderers?

Answer: Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold

On the morning of Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at approximately 11:35 AM, 18 year-old Eric Harris and 17 year-old Dylan Klebold, entered Columbine High through the back door of the cafeteria. Upon entering the building, Harris and Klebold began shooting. They had semi-automatic rifles hidden under their long black trenchcoats. Harris and Klebold intended to do bodily harm that day, and by the end of the rampage they had succeeded in doing just that.

The town of Littleton would never be the same.
2. After entering the cafeteria, Harris and Klebold began shooting at their fellow classmates and their teachers. When one of the teachers tried to save the students in the cafeteria, he was shot twice by the two crazed students. What was the name of the teacher, who was shot in the cafeteria?

Answer: Dave Sanders

Harris and Klebold entered the cafeteria and began their rampage. During this hellacious time, teacher and coach, Dave Sanders, whose real name was William Dave Sanders, began herding the students, who were sitting ducks for the armed intruders, to the back of the cafeteria.

As he was doing so, Sanders was shot twice, once by Harris and once by Klebold. Although he was seriously wounded, Sanders was still alive. The students, who he was trying to save, jumped to stop the bleeding of this brave man.

After shooting Sanders, Harris and Klebold strutted out of the cafeteria and headed into the hallway of the school.
3. After leaving the cafeteria, Harris and Klebold walked the halls and fired at anyone in their path. Some students, seeing the rifles, hid in the bathrooms, and some hid in closets and classrooms. Harris and Klebold were heading to one room in particular, but they couldn't resist terrorizing their classmates. Which room was it?

Answer: Library

After leaving the cafeteria, Harris and Klebold marched into the hallway, on their way to the library, and they began shooting at anyone in their line of fire. Their classmates, in an attempt to escape the bullets, hid in closets, classrooms, storage rooms, and lockers. Upon entering the library, Klebold and Harris began shooting again.

The unsuspecting students in the library turned over tables and hid behind them. This was their only protection from the to mad intruders. While Klebold and Harris were in the library, students from the cafeteria, and students fleeing the hallways of the school, escaped.

Other students weren't so lucky to be able to run out the doors, quite a few made daring escapes from second and third story windows. One young man, as was shown on national television, was dangling out a third story window, bleeding, in an attempt to escape.

He was just one of the many who were injured. By the time Klebold and Harris entered the library, the SWAT Team, police officers, and the sheriff's department were already on the scene.

The call came from a student, using a cell phone, in the cafeteria where Dave Sanders was shot. SWAT team members were reluctant to enter the building, because they were informed that there were explosives on the premises. Not knowing exactly where the explosives were located, the SWAT team entered the building cautiously.
4. Survivors of this fateful day stated that Klebold and Harris were laughing as they shot their fellow classmates.

Answer: True

During this brutal and heinous school massacre, Klebold and Harris were laughing and smiling as they mowed down their fellow classmates in cold blood. During the rampage, the two young murderers shot at anyone they saw, especially those who represented the "in" crowd.
5. At 12:30 PM, the last shots were reported. When the police and SWAT team members entered the school, they discovered that Klebold and Harris had shot themselves. How many students and teachers, along with Klebold and Harris, were murdered?

Answer: 15

Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold took their own lives, after they murdered fellow students Cassie Bernall, Kelly Fleming, Daniel Rohrbough, Isaiah Shoels, Steven Curnow, Matthew Ketcher, Rachel Scott, Lauren Townsend, Corey DePooter, Daniel Mauser, John Tomlin, Kyle Velasquez. Sadly, teacher and coach, Dave Sanders, who survived the first onslaught, died a few minutes before rescue workers were able to reach him.

He was the 15th victim of this gruesome school rampage. Dozens more were critically wounded, but lived to tell their story.

As the story unfolded on national television, horrified parents rushed to the school to see if their children were hurt in any way. Sadly, 15 families lost someone they loved. What caused Klebold and Harris to lose sight of their morals? Were they victims of society? Or, were they misfits cast in a popular society?
6. Days after the shooting, it was found that Klebold and Harris belonged to a small clique of outcast students. What was the name that this group of elite misfits called themselves?

Answer: The Trenchcoat Mafia

Eric Harris was born to Wayne and Kathy Harris on April 9, 1981, in Wichita, Kansas, and was an only child. The son of an Air Force pilot, Eric had to change schools often. In 1996, when his father retired from the Air Force, the Harrises moved to Littleton, Colorado. Eric was extremely good at softball and baseball, and even joined the Boy Scouts.

But even as Eric succeeded in these extracurricular activities, he was drawn to the world of video games and computers. Eric dreamed of being in the Marine Corps, but a few days prior to the massacre, he received a letter stating that he was being rejected.

This letter basically crushed all of his dreams of bettering his life. Dylan Klebold was born to Sue and Tom Klebold on September 9, 1981, in Lakewood, Colorado, and he had an older brother named, Byron. Early in his childhood, the Klebolds moved to Littleton, where had a normal childhood.

It would appear that there was nothing out of the ordinary in Dylan's life, that would or could turn him into a killer.

However, Dylan's life changed when he befriended Eric Harris in 1996. When Eric and Dylan became friends, they also had some run-ins with the law. They were arrested for criminal trespass and theft for breaking into a car and stealing some tools. However, Dylan's family placed all the blame on Eric, and Eric's family placed all the blame on Dylan. Exactly who was the blame would never be known, as both boys kept it to themselves. During their time together, the two boys became involved with a group of misfit students, who called themselves The Trenchcoat Mafia. This group of teens hung out together, and criticized the "in" crowd," and were known for wearing ankle length black trenchcoats. Also, Eric Harris had been taking the antidepressant drug, known as Luvox, because he had an obsessive-compulsive disorder. According to the FDA, this drug normally doesn't cause psychological side effects, unless taken with other drugs or alcohol. Eerily, after the massacre in the school, an autopsy was performed on Eric and Dylan, and no drugs or alcohol were found in their systems. It seems that Eric and Dylan were in their right frame of mind when they committed this horrible crime.
7. As part of their rampage, Harris and Klebold had planned to commandeer a plane and crash it into New York City.

Answer: True

In Eric Harris' diary, authorities found an entry that stated, as part of their murderous plan, they were going to kill as many as 500 people. Also, as part of their plan to get even for the perceived wrongs inflicted upon them, Dylan and Eric had planned to continue their bloody and deadly murder rampage in neighboring cities, and their ultimate plan was to hijack a plane and crash it into New York City.
8. During the investigation into the most horrific school shooting, authorities discovered, among other things, that Harris and Klebold had threatened to kill a 17 year-old boy. What was this boy's name?

Answer: Brooks Brown

While investigating the two young murderers, the authorities discovered that the previous year Dylan and Eric had threatened to kill 17 year-old Brook Brown. When Brown's mother went to the police to launch a complaint, the police didn't do anything. Maybe, just maybe, if the police had taken Mrs. Brown seriously the previous year, then maybe the students and teacher who were murdered on April 20, 1999, would still be alive.
9. Weeks after the massacre, the authorities discovered that a close friend of Klebold had purchased one of the semiautomatic rifles, that was used the killings. What was the name of Klebold's friend?

Answer: Robyn Anderson

Robyn Anderson, a close friend of Dylan's, attended a gun show and purchased the assault rifles. Anderson, an 18 year-old student at Columbine, had known Dylan for quite a few years. However, it was concluded that Anderson didn't have prior knowledge of the fateful events of that day.
10. Many months after the massacre at Columbine High, two men were arrested and sent to prison for supplying Klebold and Harris with the murder weapons. What are the names of these two men?

Answer: Mark Manes and Philip Duran

Mark Manes, was sent to prison for six years for supplying Dylan and Eric with the TEC-DC9 assault weapon. Although Manes claimed he had no prior knowledge, and claimed that he was mortified when he found out that the weapons, that he supplied Dylan and Eric with, were used in the bloody rampage. Philip Duran was sent to prison for four and a half years for his part of the murders.

He was the man who helped Dylan and Eric acquire the rifles. For both trials, the families of the victims were in the courtroom as the sentences were handed down. Because of the murders in Littleton, public schools across the nation have increased security, and threats are taken more seriously than they were before this happened.
