Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Shakespeare wrote a number of 'Henry' history plays. Which did he write first?

Answer: 'Henry VI'

The three parts of 'Henry VI' were among his first plays. 'Henry IV' (parts one and two) and 'Henry V' followed within the next ten years. Henry VII appears as a character in 'Richard III,' but Shakespeare did not write a play bearing his name.
2. This Henry is said to have stood barefoot in the snow for three days to beg the Pope's forgiveness after his excommunication:

Answer: Emperor Henry IV

Pope Gregory the Great excommunicated Henry IV in a struggle over the right to appoint bishops. Threatened with overthrow by nobles loyal to the papacy, Henry gave in. He crossed the Alps in the winter of 1076-77 to plead for absolution at the Castle of Canossa in Northern Italy.
3. This Henry intended to leave his throne to his daughter Matilda, but his sudden death (from eating too many lamprey eels) saw his will unfulfilled:

Answer: Henry I, King of England

Henry's nephew, Stephen, seized the office for himself -- despite having sworn to recognize Matilda's inheritance. With French help, Matilda forced Stephen to accept her son (the future Henry II) as his heir.
4. Matilda went on to marry a man named Henry. Which?

Answer: Emperor Henry V

The marriage was childless. Matilda remarried after Emperor Henry's death. Her son, the future Henry II, acquired the epithet of 'Fitzempress,' or 'son of the empress.'
5. Which Henry died in a jousting accident, a mishap said to be predicted in the writings of Nostradamus?

Answer: Henry II, King of France

Splinters of his opponent's lance entered his gilded helmet, penetrating his eye and temple. The prophecy had read, 'The young lion will overcome the older one, -- On the field of combat in a single {battle;} -- He will pierce his eyes through a golden cage, -- Two wounds made one, then he dies a cruel death.'
6. Which Henry was married to Eleanor of Aquitaine?

Answer: Henry II, King of England

Eleanor was previously married to Louis VII of France. The marriage with Henry II became the subject of the play (and later, film), 'The Lion in Winter.'
7. Which Henry was said to have maintained a chaste marriage, for which, among other things, he and his wife were canonized as saints?

Answer: Emperor Henry II

Accounts of Henry and his wife Cunegund's chaste marriage are generally considered apocryphal. St. Henry's feast day is July {17;} St. Cunegund's is March 3.
8. Which Henry cannot claim Charles of Valois as an ancestor?

Answer: Henry V, King of England

Henry V was only married into the Valois family: His wife was Catherine of Valois, the son of Charles VI, King of France. Henry II and III, Kings of France, belong to the House of Valois. Henry VII is the grandson of Catherine of Valois by her later marriage to Owen Tudor.
9. Which Henry was known as 'The Fowler'?

Answer: Emperor Henry I

He got his epithet because he was found hunting at the time of his election. Henry IV, King of France was known as 'The Great.'
10. How many times did Henry VIII, King of England, marry?

Answer: 6

He divorced two of his wives, had another two divorced from their heads, survived one and was survived by the last.
11. Of the following Henrys, which was the last to leave power?

Answer: Henry IV, King of France

The Bourbon Henry IV ruled from 1589-1610. Henry VIII, King of England ruled from 1509-47. Emperor Henry VI ruled from 1191-97, Emperor Henry VII from 1312-13.
12. Which English Henry does not appear as a character in one of Shakespeare's plays?

Answer: Henry II

Although he is King John's father, Henry II does not appear in 'King {John;'} John's son, Henry III, does. Henry VII appears in Richard III. Henry VIII appears in a play of his own name.
13. Which Henry was assassinated by a knife-wielding monk for allowing a Protestant to succeed him to the throne?

Answer: Henry III, King of France

Henry's choice of the Huguenot Henry IV as his successor provoked the memorably-named 'War of Three Henrys.' (The third Henry, the Duc de Guise, fought the other two in the name of religion.)
14. Which Henry was crowned in his mother's jewelry?

Answer: Henry III, King of England

King John's baggage train was washed away while crossing a river, and the crown was never recovered. Henry was crowned with a necklace or bracelet belonging to his mother, Isabella.
15. Which Henry married a descendant of the prophet Muhammad?

Answer: Emperor Henry VI

Henry VI married Constance of Sicily, the daughter of the Norman King Roger II of Sicily. The Normans had only recently conquered Sicily; it had been under Arab rule for more than 200 years. Constance's mother Beatrix of Rethel (third wife of Roger II) could trace her descent to the Emir of Seville, and back to the Prophet by way of his daughter, Fatima.

Henry VI's son and successor, Frederick II 'Stupor Mundi' is thus also descended from Muhammad.
