Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dr. Saso Baricevic of Slovenia was killed by his three large bullmastiffs in 2010. Ironically, Baricevic had earlier fought to save the dogs from being euthanized, after they committed what offense?

Answer: They attacked and seriously injured a man.

The dogs (Atlas, Joy and Atos), were ordered to be euthanized after they attacked a man in 2006. A lengthy court battle followed which received national attention. Eventually, the dogs were returned to Baricevic who was ordered to pay a substantial fine. But four years later they showed their gratitude by killing him.
2. In 1999 a German hunter was shot to death by his dog.

Answer: True

The 51-year-old man from Bad Urach was found sprawled next to his car in the Black Forest. His bereaved dog was howling inside the car next to the man's shotgun. Ruling out foul play, police believe the animal pressed the trigger with its paw.
3. In 2011 Marius Els, a South African farmer, was killed by his pet, Humphrey. What sort of animal was Humphrey?

Answer: Hippopotamus

Els rescued his pet hippo as a calf when Humphrey was orphaned by a flood. Despite friends' warnings that Humphrey was becoming dangerous, Els and his pet had become media stars, showing off their supposed bond. Months before Els' death he uploaded a video to YouTube entitled "My Pet Hippo: I Love Humphrey".

Hippos kill more people in Africa each year than many species such as elephants, lions, leopards, and rhinos which are often thought to be more dangerous. Els ignored signs that Humphrey was becoming a danger and continued stunts such as posing for pictures while "riding" on the hippo's back. Humphrey killed Els by repeatedly biting and gouging him.
4. A Florida woman and her family were attacked by her pet pitbull in 2017. What did she do that caused the dog to turn on them?

Answer: Tried to make him wear a sweater.

Brenda Guerrero's pitbull, Scarface, turned on her in her Tampa home when she tried to put the sweater on him. When her husband tried to help her, the dog turned on him too. Their adult son tried to intervene but he couldn't stop the dog's attacks either.

The family finally managed to escape, leaving the dog outside. Animal Control officers were called and managed to subdue the pitbull with a taser. Officers said Scarface was "pretty aggressive".
5. An Iranian hunter was reportedly killed when an animal he was attempting to capture pulled the trigger of his shotgun. What creature managed to fire the weapon?

Answer: Snake

The hunter was shot to death near Tehran by a snake that coiled around his shotgun as he pinned the reptile to the ground. A fellow hunter reported that the victim attempted to capture the snake by pressing the butt of his shotgun behind the snake's head. The snake coiled around the gun and pulled the trigger, shooting the man in the head.
6. An Oregon farmer went missing for several hours. When family members found him his body had been partially eaten by which of his farm animals?

Answer: Pigs

Terry Vance Garner's family were shocked to discover his dentures and undisclosed body parts in his pig enclosure several hours after he went missing. Authorities conducted a lengthy investigation but failed to determine conclusively whether Garner suffered a heart attack and fell into the pen or was knocked over by his 700 pound hogs before being eaten.
7. The family of 10 year-old Aidan Pankey sued the Petco chain for selling him a pet that eventually killed the youngster. What kind of pet caused Aidan's death?

Answer: Rat

Pankey's grandmother took him to Petco and bought him a male rat which Aidan named "Alex". A couple of weeks later the boy fell ill with flu-like symptoms. His condition worsened and he was taken to hospital where he died. An autopsy listed the cause of death as Streptobacillus moniliformis infection - rat-bite fever.

The family sued Petco, saying they were negligent in selling diseased animals. A jury ruled in favor of Petco who showed that they tested a random sample of the rats they sold and warned customers purchasing pet rats that they could carry disease.
8. Aleta Stacey died in 2011 when she was bitten by one of the pet snakes she kept in her home. What species, a native of sub-Saharan Africa and one of the most venomous snakes in the world, killed her?

Answer: Black Mamba

Stacey and her boyfriend kept 75 snakes - 56 of them venomous - in their Putnam, New York home. Her boyfriend discovered her body and then found that the snake's cage was unlocked. Because she never called to report the bite and request emergency assistance friends suggested that Stacey had committed suicide by snakebite. Authorities found no evidence that the death was suicide and it was ruled an accident.

The neurotoxin in a black mamba's venom can produce symptoms in a victim within 20 minutes of a bite. All 75 of Aleta Stacey's snakes were eventually placed with the Bronx Zoo.
9. In November 2019, Mary Matthews was found dead in her Ohio home. She had been attacked by her dogs and died from the wounds. What breed were the killer canines?

Answer: Great Dane

Police determined that Matthews was attacked by her own dogs, suffering multiple cuts and puncture wounds on the lower half of her body. Investigators found two "large but thin" Great Danes on an enclosed deck of the home and blood and blood-stained clothing throughout the house.

Her use of prescription drugs may have contributed to the incident as well as her failure to grasp how serious her wounds were. Her husband found her body when he returned home after being released from jail.
10. In 2007 a Queensland woman was killed when her pet knocked her to the ground and attempted to mate with her. What kind of animal was her pet?

Answer: Camel

The ten-month old camel, weighing about 350 pounds, apparently knocked Pam Weaver to the ground before attempting to straddle her. Weaver's husband, who gave her the camel as a birthday gift, returned home and discovered his wife's body. The family reported that the young camel had exhibited erratic behavior, trying to mount other species including Weaver's pet goat.

Camel expert Chris Hill said he had no doubt the animal's behavior was sexual. Hill said young camels were usually not aggressive but could be dangerous if treated as pets. The bizarre tragedy happened at the Weaver family's sheep and cattle ranch near Mitchell, 350 miles west of Brisbane.
