Rejection stalking is usually caused by attempting to reconcile the relationship, or to exact revenge for a perceived rejection and though victims are usually romantic partners, it can also be triggered by a rejection from anybody that was close to the stalker such as a parent, work associate, or acquaintance. Often the stalking becomes a substitute for the lost relationship.

There are five main sub types of stalking, these being rejection, intimacy seeking, resentful, predatory and the incompetent suitor.

Answer: David Letterman

Ray broke into Letterman's house several times, stole his car and claimed to be his wife but Letterman was reluctant to press charges originally due to her illness though he finally did in an attempt to stop her and she served almost three years in jail and psychiatric hospitals. On her release, she began stalking Musgrave and served more jail time for trespassing on his property.

Manukonda also sent flowers, turned up at Zuckerberg's house, contacted his sister and girlfriend and told him that he was ready to die for him. Resentful stalkers don't want a relationship with their victim, but instead view themselves as the victim, feeling that they have somehow been treated unfairly and their actions are therefore justified. Following the restraining order, Manukonda alleged Zuckerberg had hired a hitman to have him killed.

Incompetent suitor subtypes such as O'Ryan harbour a desire that their behavior will lead to a close relationship although they often acknowledge the fact that their victim is not reciprocating their affection. They have an inability to carry out normal socially acceptable courting rituals and so use methods that are often counterproductive and frightening. Britney Spears has also been the victim of this type of attention when a stalker sent her countless photos and love letters saying things such as "I'm chasing you."

Answer: John Hinckley Jr.

Hinckley Jr. became obsessed with Foster after seeing her play the part of a child prostitute in the 1976 movie "Taxi Driver" and believed they were soul mates, meant to be together, a common intimacy seeker trait. When Foster took a sabbatical from acting in 1980 to become a student at Yale university, Hinckley Jr. also enroled at the college in order to be close to her. Following the assassination attempt which he called "the greatest love offering in the history of the world" he was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was sent to a psychiatric hospital, from which he was released in 2016.

Answer: The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

Bradford had previously written a book, based on her past fixation entitled "My S/M Romp with Alec Baldwin" and used the fact that the Farrell incident was cut from the show as proof of her claims that they were close but Farrell wanted to keep their relationship a secret.

When he filed the restraining order, she complained "Colin has hurt me so deeply, and I'm here to disparage the rumors and lies. I am not a stalker, and he's machete-chopped my name in public". She also has several videos online demonstrating a unique musical ability.

Answer: Amanda Todd

Tragically, all of the answers are teens that took their own lives due to cyberstalking, but Amanda Todd with her emotional use of flash cards in a Youtube video is probably the best remembered. While in seventh grade a stranger in a video chat room convinced Amanda to bare her breasts on camera.

He then used the captured screen shot to blackmail her and even used it as a profile picture on a fake Facebook account. She moved schools several times but he always managed to find her and as her mother said, "The Internet stalker she flashed kept stalking her." This was a case that highlighted the fact that with cyberbullying, there is no escape as the internet is everywhere.

Answer: Theresa Saldana

Saldana was a victim of predatory stalker Arthur Jackson in 1982, when he approached Saldana in front of her house and stabbed her in the torso 10 times with a 5½-inch knife so violently that he bent the blade. The attack left her requiring four hours of surgery and months in hospital but she did recover and return to acting. Jackson served almost 14 years in prison for the assault and making subsequent threats against Saldana while incarcerated.

Answer: Shania Twain

Palumbo fits the classic intimacy seeker profile believing that his love was reciprocated. The behaviour of erotomaniacs such as this is driven by delusional beliefs about the victim such as believing they are closely linked to that person. At his trial, Palumbo, even interrupted proceedings to address Twain personally.

He was sentenced to three years probation with strict restrictions regarding proximity to Twain.

Answer: John Lennon

Chapman was a huge fan of rock music and Lennon in particular until he read a biography of the musician and became angry that Lennon preached love and peace while having millions of dollars. He shot Lennon four times in the back and then stood calmly reading "The Catcher In The Rye" until police arrived and arrested him. He was imprisoned in 1981 for 20 years to life.
