Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1986, which famous abolitionist was commemorated on a 22 cent Black Heritage USA stamp which features a dual picture of her?

Answer: Sojourner Truth

Isabella Baumfreem, known as Sojourner Truth, had a long life marred by the ravages of slavery. She spoke out during the U.S. Civil War against slavery, even meeting President Abraham Lincoln.
Her most famous speech entitled, "Ain't I a Woman?" includes the exerpt: "I have plowed, and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me -- and ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man (when I could get it), and bear the lash as well -- and ain't I a woman? I have borne thirteen children and seen most all sold off to slavery and when I cried out with my mother's grief, none but Jesus heard me -- and ain't I woman?"
She fell ill in the summer of 1883 developing ulcers on her legs. It is rumored that she visited the famous Battle Creek Sanitarium where founder John Harvey Kellogg allegedly grafted his own skin onto her ailing legs. Her illness did not improve and she died in the fall of the same year.
2. Which blues singer was commemorated on a 29 cent stamp in 1994 that shows her wearing a pink flower against a blue and green background singing happily?

All four women are blues singers who were commemorated on stamps. In 1994, several other musicians were honored on stamps including Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Ethel Merman and Mildred Bailey.
3. In what year was actress Marilyn Monroe honored on a U.S. postage stamp?

5. What is the original cent value marked on a Grandma Moses stamp?

Answer: 6 cents

The stamp was released in a ceremony in Washington on 1 May 1969, marking the beginning of Senior Citizens Month. It depicts her famous "July Fourth" painting.
6. Who was the only actress to be commemorated in 2005 on a U.S. Postal stamp?

Answer: Greta Garbo

All three other women were commemorated, just not in 2005. Lucille was featured in 2001. Audrey Hepburn was depicted in 2003. Grace was the first of the choices to grace a stamp in 1993.
7. Who was the first woman featured on a U.S. Postage stamp?

Answer: Isabella of Castile

The Molly Pitcher stamp is one of great debate since it didn't depict the actual person (Mary Hays McCauly) but rather it was a two cent stamp picturing George Washington with the name "Molly Pitcher" printed over the face of Washington in black ink. Fifty years later, the Postal Service issued a ten-cent commemorative postcard with an artist's drawing of Molly Pitcher in the act of loading a cannon and firing it as she had done.

The stamp honors not only the woman Mary Hays McCauly who fought in the Battle of Monmouth.

It was also meant to honor all women who had fought during the Revolution.
