Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Normally, people with an unusual, unpronounceable, or just plain funny name will change it so that people might take them more seriously. However, this is not quite always the case. What singer, born Arnold George Dorsey, adopted the name of a German opera composer as his stage name?

Answer: Englebert Humperdinck

"Hänsel und Gretel" is perhaps Humperdinck the elder's best-known opera. Humperdinck (the younger) is known for tunes like "From Here to Eternity" and "A Place in the Sun."
2. Marilyn Monroe is possibly the most iconic sex symbol the world has ever known. Her name is associated with everything beautiful. However, if Monroe was to keep her baptism name, which name would stand for the epitome of beauty?

Answer: Norma Jeane Baker

Norma Jeane Baker, the name most people associate as Monroe's "birth name," is actually the name that Monroe was baptized under (Baker was her mother's last name). However, when she was born, her birth certificate read Norma Jeane Mortenson, after the name of the man who was listed as her father, Edward Mortenson.
3. Lev Davidovich Bronstein is perhaps one of the best-known Russian leaders of the 20th century. Wait, you've never heard of him? Perhaps you might recognize his pseudonym? What was it again?

Answer: Leon Trotsky

Trotsky was not the only Russian leader to go by a name other than the one he was given at birth. Lenin was born Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov.
4. Flamboyant fitness enthusiast Richard Simmons was born with quite a different first name. What was it? Too hard? OK, he shares this first name with a baseball player with the surname Bradley. And that baseball player's full name is also the name of a company well-known for making board games. Now can you guess?

Answer: Milton

Richard Simmons is known for his extremely "colorful" outfits, and often too-short shorts. Despite his status as the butt of many pop culture jokes, Simmons was once obese himself, and is an outspoken advocate of programs that reduce childhood obesity.
5. Take him home, country roads! What geographically-named crooner was born Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr?

Answer: John Denver

Denver, who died in a plane crash in 1997, wrote many songs that have become part of the fabric of American culture.

"Thank God I'm A Country Boy" is played during the 7th inning stretch of Baltimore Orioles games.

"Rocky Mountain High" is the official state song of Colorado (even though Denver was born in New Mexico, and his last name really isn't Denver).

"Leaving on a Jet Plane" has been recorded by bands from Sister Hazel to Eve6.
6. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. He was the subject of the Italian film "Il Postino." He was a Stalinist. He was born Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto. Who was he?

Answer: Pablo Neruda

All of the listed men were Nobel laureates in literature.

Gabriel García Márquez (1982) wrote "One Hundred Years of Solitude."

Miguel Ángel Asturias (1967) wrote "Hombres de maíz."

Juan Ramón Jiménez (1956) wrote "Platero y yo."

Besides being an acclaimed poet, Neruda was a diplomat for his homeland of Chile, holding posts in Argentina, Spain, France, and Mexico.
7. Jacob Cohen never got any respect. None, I tell 'ya. He appeared in "Caddyshack" and "Back to School." Who do we know him as?

Answer: Rodney Dangerfield

As you might figure, Chevy Chase was not named after any Maryland/Washington D.C. locale. He was born Cornelius Crane Chase. In fact, his nickname had nothing to do with the place, anyway. It was a name given to him by his grandmother, after "The Ballad of Chevy Chase".

Dangerfield actually worked under a different name at first, Jack Roy. While using that pseudonym, he wrote jokes for different stand-up comics.
8. James Newell Osterberg, Jr. doesn't really sound like the name of a guy who has been knighted the "Godfather of Punk." What name is Osterberg better known by (and should I mention, it fits him much better)?

Answer: Iggy Pop

Iggy took his stage name from his early band, The Iguanas. However, the band that was with him when he hit the big time was called The Stooges.
9. It really wouldn't be a quiz without a reference to an obscure 1980's artist. Johann Hölzel recorded "Rock Me Amadeus" under what birdlike stage name?

Answer: Falco

Probably the best use of Falco's song was by "The Daily Show", which changed the lyrics to "Iraq me Dave Petraeus". Falco's first hit was "Der Kommissar", a song about drugs.
10. The alias "Rusty Shackleford" is held by both a real Canadian DJ and a fictional character on "King of the Hill." Which character goes by the pseudonym "Rusty" every now and then?

Answer: Dale Gribble

The real fake Rusty Shackleford was born Chris Cannon. Dale Gribble (the character) is voiced by Johnny Hardwick, a stand-up comic from Texas.
