Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Romantic poet extraordinaire, he wrote 'Endymion' for Thomas Chatterton, a fellow poet who had committed suicide at 17. Sadly, this writer of many odes had his name 'writ in water' at the very young age of 25. Who was he?

Answer: John Keats

Keats' gravestone reads at bottom the following epitaph, 'Here lies one whose name was writ in water, Feb. 24th 1821'. Such a shame that one so young and talented had to leave us...
2. He shouted 'Sic semper tyrannus' after having shot one of the great men of history, and even Dr. Mudd couldn't save him who had been fatally shot at age 27. Name him.

Answer: Booth

Booth escaped Ford's Theater, where he had shot President Abraham Lincoln, with but a broken leg. Later he was shot in a barn in Virginia by Sergeant Boston Corbett where he had refused to give himself up.
3. This may be a surprise. One of the greatest fighter pilots of all time, he shot down 80 enemy aircraft before himself falling victim in a dogfight at only 25 years of age! Who is this leader of the 'Flying Circus'?

Answer: Richthofen

Manfred Richthofen, aka the Red Baron, was the greatest German fighter pilot of World War I, but even his luck could not last forever. His 11th Chasing Squadron was also called 'Richthofen's Flying Circus'...Monty Python eat your heart out!
4. Also known as 'Lady Rebecca' by the English and 'Matoaka' by her parents, this young lady passed away at the age of 22 in England. Who is she?

Answer: Pocahontas

Pocahontas was a nickname for Matoaka which meant 'mischievous one'. She died in Gravesend, Kent, in England where she had resettled to live with her English husband John Rolfe (not John Smith!). Pocahontas was supposedly the first Native American to have converted to Anglicanism.
5. Several of Henry VIII's wives met their deaths in their 20s, but which was the youngest when she met her end?

Answer: Catherine Howard

Catherine Howard was only 21-22 when she was beheaded, accused of having committed adultery. Jane Seymour was only 28 when she died, but not before producing a son and heir to the throne, the future Edward VI (who also died young). Anne Boleyn was only 29 when she lost her head, literally...accused of the trumped-up charges of adultery and incest. Her legacy? A daughter named Elizabeth. Henry's other 3 wives made it past 30, a stellar achievement when you realize the odds were 50/50.
6. All of the Brontes, including the brother Patrick Branwell, died at relatively young ages. But which of the siblings died while still in their 20s?

Answer: Anne

Amazingly, these prolific siblings were all dead of tuberculosis by the age of 39. Anne met her end at 29, Emily at 30, Branwell at 31 and Charlotte, the grand old lady of the family, at 39. How sad!
7. Several modern American musicians died at a rather young age in the 1960s. Which of these performers passed away in a plane crash in 1967 at only 26 years of age?

Answer: Otis Redding

Redding is probably most famous for his song 'Dock of the Bay', which was released the year after his death.
8. This Elizabethan poet and dramatist got into a bar fight over a bill (or perhaps he was done in by political intrigue) while only 29 years of age, unfortunately, this author of 'Dr Faustus' and 'Hero and Leander' did not get out...he died of a stab wound. Which of the following was he?

Answer: Marlowe

Kit Marlowe was murdered in a tavern in Deptford, apparently over a bar tab...but some believe he was murdered for political reasons. We may never know...but we do know that his collected works are wonderful to read...
9. An American journalist and writer, he left us at the age of 29, but not before putting the face of reality on war which he explained in his 'Red Badge of Courage'. Name this treasured writer.

Answer: Stephen Crane

Another victim of TB, Crane was still able to produce one of the great war novels of all time. Willa Cather put it best about Crane when she said, 'He died young, but he had done something real. One can read him today.' That was said in 1931, but it's still true in 2002!
10. This American musician died at only 27 in 1970, but not before burning a few guitars and the impression of psychedelic hard rock on the minds of young people around the world. Are you experienced enough to know this answer? Name him...

Answer: Hendrix

Jimi (James Marshall) Hendrix's career lasted for only 5 years, but his influence on music will be felt for a long time to come. Thanks for taking this quiz...let's hope we all outlive the folks mentioned herein!
