Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's say I'm building a Colonial house and I need to design a cantilever for it. What am I doing to the house?

Answer: Putting an overhang on the outside

Cantilever is the overhang on the second story of the house. A lot of people like this design because it gives more room to the second floor, but it must be done to code, so every one foot you go out, you must go four to five feet in. (It varies in different areas according to your town's building code.)
2. If I have to "rip" down a full sheet of plywood, which of the following common tools might I use?

Answer: Table Saw

A full sheet of plywood is 4 x 8 feet. You're going to want to use the table saw for that. If you're on the job you could use the hand saw, it just will take forever and it won't come out as straight. The jig saw is for smaller work and scrolling saws are for fine detail work.
3. What shaped objects end up coming out after you've just finished taking down a block on a lathe?

Answer: Cylindrical

Lathes are used to make bats and designed objects. Whether it is a miniature lighthouse, or a candle holder, or something bigger, I've seen it all. Some part of the wood ends up coming out round.
4. What is a cupola?

Answer: Vent for air to escape

You will usually see one of these on a barn or gazebo, and probably with a weathervane on top. They have slits on the sides and they are usually octagonal or hexagonal. Hot air rises and has to go somewhere, so barns usually have these on the roof to allow the barn to breathe out the hot air. It is mostly a decoration on gazebos.
5. Why should you put Tyvek on your house?

Answer: To let the house breathe out moisture

When you take a shower or use the heat in your house, or in many other instances, moisture is in thrown into the air and it is trapped inside of your house. The moisture wants to escape so it tries to go through the walls, and if it can't get out because of the barrier then the wood will rot.

When you put Tyvek on your house, you allow it to breathe. The moisture can get out, but the rain from the outside can't get in. This goes on the house before the siding.
6. What are the two parts to a framing square?

Answer: Body and Tongue

The tongue is the shorter part of the framing square. You use the rise measurement on the tongue and the body is the longer part. The run measurement goes on that part so you can mark your rafters.
7. What are the three things you need to know to start on a roof?

Answer: Rise, Run, Span

You need to know the rise and run of your roof to find out how long your rafters should be. (Even if you look it up in the blue book instead of using math.) You also need to know the span of the house to place your ridge.
8. What kind of truss do you need for a cathedral ceiling?

Answer: Scissor

It is pretty impossible to make cathedral ceilings without using trusses. I wouldn't "attempt" it anyway. Cathedral ceilings are wide open so you need a Scissor truss to be able to utilize the open area. It is shaped like scissors and very thin to accomodate the weight of the roof and the architectural design. Churches usually have cathedral ceilings.
9. What is a purlin?

Answer: Support in the roof

A purlin is similar to the web of a truss, only it is only for houses without trusses.
10. Which of these is not a type of roof?

Answer: Valley

There are many different versions of roofs. A valley is the leg of a hip roof. The rest are actual roofs. The most common roof people have is gable, but that wasn't an option.
11. In a wall, what does a jack support?

Answer: Header

Jacks are slightly shorter king studs. They are made to support the header in a doorway or window.
12. When must you have two jacks next to each other? When an opening is bigger than ...?

Answer: 6 feet

If you're going to code, when the opening is more than six feet you need two jacks under the header.
13. What is the common number (in Connecticut) of inches apart for studs in a wall?

Answer: 16 O.C.

You can have any distance you want for studs to be apart in a wall. As long as you stay the same throughout the whole house and they don't get any farther apart than 24 O.C., then you're fine. The common number is 16 O.C. though.
14. What does O.C. mean?

Answer: On center

O.C. refers to the center of a stud. When you are on 16 O.C. you're on the center of the stud. A common measurement is necessary so you know where to nail when you're putting up plywood.
15. In the US, what does OSHA stand for?

Answer: Occupational Safety and Health Administration

Well, I'd hope you know this. They fine you big bucks if they come out on the job and find people without the proper safety equipment on.
