Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many carpenters rely on the advice of the oft used proverb "measure twice, cut once". Which measuring tool could a carpenter use for this task?

Answer: tape

Carpenters will generally employ a self-retracting measuring tape. Measuring tapes come in various lengths, and are manufactured from many different materials.

James Chesterman (England) designed and patented a spring tape measure in 1829. Making significant improvements, Alvin J. Fellows filed for a patent for a brand new invention in the U.S. in 1868. Hiram A. Farrand filed for U.S. patent on his spring tape measure in 1919. Farrand then worked with The Brown Company to mass-produce the tape measure which was eventually sold to Stanley Works.
2. In this scenario the carpenter has all of his wood, but it's all the same size. What tool might he use to trim the wood to the proper size?

Answer: saw

The type of saw the carpenter will use will be strongly influenced by the type of carpentry he's doing. For example, some carpenters prefer the aesthetic of creating furniture without using any electrically powered devices, and they would generally utilize several types of hand saws (and maybe chisels) to create their art. Or a carpenter might be building a tract of houses for a new development and utilizing one or several types of circular blade saws.
3. A carpenter may need to ensure that something be built at exact angles. Which geometrically named tool could be used?

Answer: square

The carpentry square might be called a framing, roofing or rafter square. These tools are not rectangular, but "L" shaped. The tool is used not only for 90 degree angles, but to design rafters at specific angles.

Before software programs to calculate the angles, learning how to utilize the framing square was essential.
4. This time a carpenter is building a new shelving unit in a kitchen. Which tool would be used to ensure the shelves are plumb?

Answer: level

A bubble level can come in many lengths, but will contain one or several tubes of liquid which can be viewed to determine if a surface is level in either the horizontal or vertical plane. There are also laser line and digital levels that can be used.
5. When a carpenter is ready to hit the nail on the head, what tool will they use?

Answer: hammer

One of the hammers that is most common is a claw hammer with a head to drive nails and a claw to pull nails out. Many believe the hammer to be one of the oldest tools.

There are many specialty type hammers for specific jobs, such as sledgehammers, wooden and rubber mallets, etc.
6. Sometimes a piece won't be nailed together, but fastened with a corkscrew shaped shaft. What tool would be used with these fasteners?

Answer: screwdriver

Carpenters will often use screws to fasten pieces together. The most common types are flat head and Phillips head. It is important to match not only the head of the screw to the screwdriver but also the size. Utilizing non-matching screw heads and screwdrivers can result in stripping the indentations from the top of the screw.
7. A carpenter may want to mark a chalk line as a reference. Alternatively, which humble graphite item may be used?

Answer: pencil

Now you may be thinking that any old pencil will do, and in a pinch it might. But there are several design factors that make the carpenter's pencil unique. A carpenter's pencil is generally made in a semi-flat elliptical form to prevent it from rolling. In addition, the lead is generally larger and stronger so that it can be used to create legible markings on just about anything.
8. A carpenter might use pliers to manipulate items. What specialized pliers would be used as an end-cutter?

Answer: pincers

Pliers are often used for mechanical leverage, and a carpenter might use them to his or her advantage. Pincers are also used for mechanical leverage and often have cutting edges. A carpenter might use pincers to remove the head from a nail or screw.
9. One of a carpenter's versatile tools sounds as if it might be used for eating. Which utility tool would be used?

Answer: knife

The trusty utility knife is usually a handle covering a retractable razor sharp blade. These tools can be used to open packages of tools such as nails, mark a piece that the carpenter is working on, or sharpen the carpenter's pencil.
10. Many carpenters carry their tools all day at a job site. What piece of attire do they wear their tools on?

Answer: belt

As you have seen, several of the carpenter's tools are small and could easily be mislaid. Many carpenters wear a belt of leather with pouches and various size loops. Other carpenters prefer a toolbox. This ensures that they retain their tools and keep them in good working order.
